Orv Reichert posted a link to the story which clarified that it was a P-38 some time ago on the P38forum.com site.

The story is that the serial number was filed off but was recovered by the forensics folks (probably by magnaflux) and the serial number turned out to be registered to Blake...

He may have been a great detective when he played Baretta on TV, but he sure turned into a dumb criminal...

There was a tape of him being deposed by an attorney on the Today show earlier this week and despite protests by his own attorney, he all but admitted that he did the deed. His attorney was not happy.

I remember that the theme song for his TV series had lyrics to the effect:

"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time"
