My understanding was that JFK was shot with a 6.5 Carcarno fitted with a cheap Jap scope. It is my understanding that the scope actually hindered the operation of the bolt to a fairly major degree. Apparently you had to open the bolt and then reposition you hand on the bolt handle to actaully pull the bolt back to open the breach, similarly holding the bolt handle two different ways was necessary to chamber a fresh round.

That's only what I heard, I wasn't there at the time!
