This was discussed recently, besides the "white out" remover, our esteemed and sometimes unfortunate British Subject stated, here is the information I have compiled for the updated FAQ, although not finalized yet:
Ways to remove the color from your numbers: Fingernail polish remover will work. I like lacquer thinner as it is not harsh and will not harm the bluing. Be sure and remove the grips. I have seen one person use an old toothbrush which seems to do the trick well. Using a toothbrush avoids the use of solvents on the blue. Gun oil and a toothbrush will do it. So, you can see there are several methods to use that are non abrasive or non-caustic methods that will work.
