removing chalk
 

Does anybody know of the best way to remove the chalk white stuff that people place in the serial ##'s and inscriptions on lugers. What is that stuff and the best way to get it out

This was discussed recently, besides the "white out" remover, our esteemed and sometimes unfortunate British Subject stated, here is the information I have compiled for the updated FAQ, although not finalized yet:

Ways to remove the color from your numbers:

Fingernail polish remover will work. I like lacquer thinner as it is not harsh and will not harm the bluing. Be sure and remove the grips.

I have seen one person use an old toothbrush which seems to do the trick well. Using a toothbrush avoids the use of solvents on the blue.

Gun oil and a toothbrush will do it.

So, you can see there are several methods to use that are non abrasive or non-caustic methods that will work.

I have used carbureator cleaner, brake cleaner, laquer thinner, acetone and just about any other cleaner at hand on my pistols and have yet to harm the blueing. If you use rust and bluing remover it will definitely do the job of getting that nasty bluing off. Some of that stuff used in the numbers and proofs is water based, just use a tooth brush and hot water and soap, others are chemical based and will require the first items I mentioned. If you are still squeemish use Hoppes #9, that should do the trick and it's made for guns.

Make sure you remove the grips, whether they are wooden or bakelite before using any solvents...

I guess I'm squeemish, I use Hobbs #9 and tooth brush. It works fine and I know it won't harm the blueing.
