Pete
When I was writing "Axis Pistols" and later "Third Reich Lugers" I had the opportunity to examine several 1939-42 dated military code Lugers with a proof sized deaths head and runes on the right receiver and barrel. Each had the usual right receiver proofs ground off and a complete set of new usual proofs and the skull and SS runes added. As I recall the regular proofs were larger than standard. On some, the ground front end of the receiver was so obvious from the top that you could see it from several feet away. The stampings were very well done and they looked neat. I was a potential customer until I finally saw one and determined it was a fake.

I can recall seeing at least five of these fake SS marked Lugers about 15 years ago. Must have been quite a few more produced. I often wonderd what crack they disappeared into and when they would reappear.
