Thats a very nice, and interesting, example. I am sure you are right about this gun starting life as an LP-08.

S/42, as you see on the barrel, is the stamp found on Mauser replacement parts. Joachim GÃ?Â¶rtz, in the February 1996 "Auto Mag", pointed out Army instruction #398, issued in 1936, which lists repair parts available to unit armorers. The only parts not available were barrels and receivers. Replacement of these parts was only to be done in the repair shop of the Field Equipment Office--the Heeres-Zeugamt.

HZa were assigned numbers, if you could make out the HZa# on your receiver someone with the specific knowledge could probably tell where the modification took place.
