New Double Date of interest.

Here is a photo of a 1917 DWM Double date that I picked up at a local auction on Sunday.

The gun is in very good condition with all of the original Imperial proofs etc. All matching numbers including the mag and the grips.

I believe, and I stand to be corrected that it may have started its days as a 1917 DWM P08 Long as the receiver is milled for the rear sight.
The barrel seems to have been replaced and correctly numbered with the lands dia stamp 8.82
a eagle 83 acceptance stamp and interesting, S 42 stamped on the barrel and another little eagle
and swastika.

You can just see the S42 in the above photo.

Note the Nazi depot number alongside the imperial proofs.

The gun came in a really nice holster marked bml/42 with an inspectors stamp WaA788 complete with spare mag and stamped tool 855.

Murray,

Thats a very nice, and interesting, example. I am sure you are right about this gun starting life as an LP-08.

S/42, as you see on the barrel, is the stamp found on Mauser replacement parts. Joachim G¶rtz, in the February 1996 "Auto Mag", pointed out Army instruction #398, issued in 1936, which lists repair parts available to unit armorers. The only parts not available were barrels and receivers. Replacement of these parts was only to be done in the repair shop of the Field Equipment Office--the Heeres-Zeugamt.

HZa were assigned numbers, if you could make out the HZa# on your receiver someone with the specific knowledge could probably tell where the modification took place.

Thanks Dwight,
Some of the letters on the depot number are difficult to make out but I think is could be:
HZaJE3 or HZaJF3 or HZaOE3 the fourth and fifth letters are not clear. The rest are fine.
I do hope some one might make out what it represents.
Regards and thanks for your post.
