There are many guns so worn that their numbers are unreadable or worn off. But we really need a number on the receiver for legal purposes, so someone just puts on a number. The same happens with parts guns assembled as a custom build. Adding a number makes it possible to transfer and sell these guns. This is probably what happened to this Luger. I wonder if you took the receiver and had it xrayed, if that would show the stress marks from the original number being punched into the metal. Then a Luger could have its original number punched on it again.
