Help to identify Luger

the number has been added, since it has a suffix, it should be only 4 numbers long

There are exceptions, but this is not one I am aware of

There are many guns so worn that their numbers are unreadable or worn off. But we really need a number on the receiver for legal purposes, so someone just puts on a number. The same happens with parts guns assembled as a custom build. Adding a number makes it possible to transfer and sell these guns. This is probably what happened to this Luger. I wonder if you took the receiver and had it xrayed, if that would show the stress marks from the original number being punched into the metal. Then a Luger could have its original number punched on it again.

The gun has been reworked. It probably was a police or armory rebuild that refinished a heavily worn or rusted gun, replaced the barrel and added the serial number in accordance with their rebuild numbering system. For all practical purposes number is not necessarily "fake", just not original, and is now the serial number that the gun will wear from here on out.

Many thanks for the information , Im from Argentina, south America, I received this gun and I try to register in the office register guns in my Country, but , they are keep my Luger for destroy it , they say that the serial number is not original and they will destroy the gun , Im very sad for this situation, anyway, thanks a lot for your knowledge , time and kindness

Sad. This happens in the U.S. sometimes, but they might allow you to keep some parts. Then you can sell these on the WWW, even cut up parts.

See if the registration office will let you keep all the parts that are not "faked" as you are apparently and innocent buyer of the gun... That way you will not lose your entire investment in this gun. Ron Wood's explanation is certainly plausible, but I think there is just as much chance that the gun serial number has been faked. An unfortunate circumstance. My condolences.

You can see that the "m" suffix for the serial number is missing the top portion because the front of the frame has been ground or sanded down to remove the original number.
