My WAG is that the reloader used just a tad too much gunpowder. It may have been one of those "here hold my beer and watch this"!!

My WAG is a double-charge. Didn't check.

"Honey, are you gonna be down there all night?!?!?"...
"What? I'll be up in a couple minutes...Where was I???"

Looks more like wrong powder. If you use the right powder for .44 mag you can't make a double charge cause the case is full.

Anyways. my main comment is:

YIKES!

Guys, this is the new S&W "Open Top" commemorative!

It is a natural progression from their silly hammer/trigger lock system. It allows you to visually inspect to see if the chamber is loaded.

Rich, if that's yours, I'm really sorry for your loss! Hope you didn't get injured.

I wish I had one like this for teaching my reloading classes. Nothing like a prime example to get students' attention...

No, not mine. I visually check each case charge.

This pic was on root66's site, with the 'quick-change' Luger barrel. No other .44 pics; I'm guessing this is one of those pics that get passed around among the gun community for years...

Only 'problem' I've ever had with loads was shooting in the Winter and the case lands in the snow...Even though it lies in a heated basement for a couple day, the melted snow inside the case didn't evaporate...There was maybe only a drop or so but I didn't notice it and it was enough to soak the powder..."Click, phht"...Out comes the squib rod!

Now I shoot indoors.

Again the greatest danger is getting your powders mixed up. Imagine you think your using 18 grs of VV n110 (fairly light load .44 Mag wise but a mangun load nonetheless) and you use instead 18 grs of VV n320.

This photo and other views of this revolver have been around on other gun forums for quite some time. The majority of folks vote for overcharge(double/triple) with a low loft fast powder that made critical mass when the primer ignited. A S&W N frame is a rugged revolver, but there are, obviously, limits to it's strength.
