The C96 wasn't the only weapon they used...the imperial stormtroopers carried MG-34's painted white as rifles...And in one scene, an Enfield No 5 'jungle carbine' has been bastardized into some kind of energy weapon...

I suppose it was cheaper to rent some 'real' weapons and cosmetically dress them up...But if they wanted realism in futuristic weapons, they should have tracked down Ed Emshwiller, a painter and illustrator from the 50's/60's who did many of the jacket/covers for the old Ace science-fiction novels...He had some really cool looking 'blasters', needlers, and energy weapons in his paintings...
