Are Broomhandle slides interchangable
 

Are Broomhandle slides (barrels) interchangable. Like Bolo, M30, etc

I have a mismatched shooter that the barrel assembly is from a different gun. But I had to changed a few parts to make it function right (trigger issues). And I'm still not perfectly happy with it. I think these guns had a lot of "hand fitting" when assembled. If I every buy another broom, I'm only going to look at ones that are all matching.
That being said, I have considered buying a 9mm barrel assembly just to try on mine, but they always sell for so much! I think there are too many Star Wars fans out there building blaster replicas.

I've always thought this curious...I mean as to why Lucas/Spielberg used old weapons instead of futuristic ones...I have a soldering gun that looks more like a blaster than a C96 Mauser does...Same with hand drill motors...

The C96 wasn't the only weapon they used...the imperial stormtroopers carried MG-34's painted white as rifles...And in one scene, an Enfield No 5 'jungle carbine' has been bastardized into some kind of energy weapon...

I suppose it was cheaper to rent some 'real' weapons and cosmetically dress them up...But if they wanted realism in futuristic weapons, they should have tracked down Ed Emshwiller, a painter and illustrator from the 50's/60's who did many of the jacket/covers for the old Ace science-fiction novels...He had some really cool looking 'blasters', needlers, and energy weapons in his paintings... :thumbup:

There is even one Imperial trooper with a Lewis gun in the first movie and the rebels on the frozen planet of Hoth carry MP44s. Rebel blasters throughout the franchise are Sterlings

There are several reasons for the choice of weapons;
- Using existing weapon platforms is cheaper than making things from scratch
- The movies were made in England and Morrocco, where these were the props that were available
- They needed the weapons to be able to fire blanks. Early CGI technology needed the muzzle flash as an index for direction and duration for the laser blasts. If you watch the first movie carefully, you will see the Sterlings ejecting brass from the custom, abbreviated magazines that were developed for the movie, (I'm guessing 3-5 round capacity). The scene where this is most obvious is where Luke swings himself and Leia over to a port inside the Death Star, where they get trapped on the ledge. As Luke fires back at Storm Troopers across the gap, you can see the brass ejecting from his blaster and hitting the wall next to him.

The attentiveness to detail and powers of observation of other forum-ites never ceases to amaze! GREAT eye, Doug!

I'll have to dig out my DVD and watch it again. Since they re-numbered them, I've lost track of which was the 'original' Star Wars...And some of mine were copied from cable so they were edited & formatted blah blah... :rolleyes:

I might not have the whole collection...How many were there???

I think the short answer is if they were from the same year the slide/barrel extensions are interchangeable...I have one with a non-matching cannon assembly which works OK but the safety is very tight...It works, just needs some muscle...I should lap it in but I'm lazy...

An early slide definitely won't interchange...See pics below...Besides the obvious differences, the newer C96 bolt won't go past the magazine well in the older extension...The rail cuts don't extend forward far enough...

I'm not that expert, BUT surely C 96 and the other "broomhandles" received quite a lot of hand fitting when assembled, and although some of them "might" be somehow interchangeable, I don't think that's the rule at all.
