At one time "real collectors" turned up their noses at unit marked pieces.
BYF 41 and 42s with bakelite grips were considered "last ditch" junk.

They only made so many and lots of people still want them.
Prices are climbing and un messed with guns are getting rare.
A dearth of parts is not a good sign, either.

Those unit marked Lugers were pre-WWI and early-WWI guns (??) So the supply usually does not come from "my veteran father passed away, and I found this under his bed". I bet all nice unit marked Lugers are in collections now. So its collectors say "it's not rare" because they saw many instances, but it does not show up in the open market frequently. Buy from a collector, that's the biggest supply of this type.

I like German unit marked pistols; I think it adds character, and mystique. But if it has name & unit of GI who brought it back, scratched in metal or carved in grips, that is, IMHO, a detraction from appeal.

I even think modifications done by German armorers are appealing; sear safeties, magazine safeties, cut down barrels [arty cut down and reissued as 4"], even Russian capture/VoPo rebuilds are interesting & appeal to me...

...But I am not a collector. My accumulation has no theme. It is just a hodgepodge of various items with no relation to each other.

Limiting the scope is not necessarily because having no energy or lack of interest to study other guns. But the cost could be prohibitive. I agree that many C&R guns are interesting.
