I did make the hardware store rounds, (that's how I came by the small stainless steel nail) But yeah I didn't think of the model train hobby, And we have a big model train store here in Louisville. Will check on it this weekend. If I remember.. the shaft of the rivet is around .035, so yeah you would need a jewelers lathe to make these.
