Black plastic mag bases

Can anyone advise when the black plastic mag bases (no number at bottom) were used in? Were they ONLY in the code 42 Lugers? Or code S/42 and byf as well?

Vernon,
I beleive they were issued sometime during 41 - 42 production and continued until the end of 42 BYF production. I dont think they are correct for S/42.

It is my belief that the black plastic bottom fxo magazines were introduced after the U-Block of the 41 byf production and supplied until the end of Luger production. Blank (un-numbered) aluminum bottom fxo magazines were supplied in the early part of this time frame, as well.

This theory is also supported by some of the more knowledgeable Luger collectors, BUT not all.

I'm sure you are correct. I used Aaron's Standard Catalog of Lugers for reference. I know that there are many mistakes in it.
Were the black plastic bottom mag and black plastic grips issued at the same time, or did one show up before the other?
I'm sure the confusion is from people changing there original wood grips and aluminum bottomed mags to plastic, to make a "BW".

Mike, it's my understanding that the grips and bottoms were authorized in July 1941.

Mike, I doubt that there was any correlation of the BP grips (have read that these were used as available from late 1939) and the BP mag bottoms. TH

I have a 1940 dated 42 code with black plastic grips and a matching aluminum bottom mag. The grips are the correct type for the year and certainly look original to me.

Hi All, for those that have 1939, 1940 or early 1941 Military Mauser Lugers with Black "Bakelite" Grips and wish to think they are original, so be it.

HOWEVER, there is absolutely no proof they were installed by the Mauser Factory. They easily could be armorer replacements or replaced post war.

I once owned a 1917 DWM with proper Bakelite Grips. Then according to the data, these grips were used as far back as 1917??
