Sorry to resurrect an old post but I just re-read this thread realized that my posts did not deliver the message that I was trying to convey, and could be taken in a negative way.

I was trying to point out that police officers face more risks than most people realize. The bad guys on the street are all that most people think of as a hazard of duty. The courtroom is another that most people do not think of. Police officers are frequently put in high risk situations where immediate decision and actions are required. If things go wrong the officer could wind up in court to defend those actions. The lawyers have months to debate weather a decision was right or wrong, the officer only had seconds (if that long!). In preparing this post I found that each year an estimated 30,000 police officers become defendants in suits filed against them, so the risk is there.

I have a great respect for those who willingly accept these risks to protect me.

Thanks,

Chris

Whoa! That's ridiculous. I had no idea.
There are a few bad cops out there who no doubt deserve to get sued, but they are undoubtedly a small percentage of that 30,000.
Cops ought to be insulated somehow from this kind of nonsense and the greedy lawyers who accompany it.
That's just not right. You don't ask a guy to put his life on the line and then expect this of him too.
