Default Star marked barrel

I'm looking at a mismatched Luger, 42/1940, that seems to have a replacement barrel. The only marking on it is a 5 point star stamped on the top. The only Luger association I know with that is the East Indies Lugers. I do not have pictures yet. No import marks. Any info would be appreciated.

get a photo !
The 5-point star was for re-worked guns.
Even with mis-matched parts it could be interesting.

I'm getting it after work today. I'll take some pics then. It is matching, except the barrel and the take down "pin". Three digit serial. Eagle/655 marks. Also come with "the original holster" it is a real 1941 holster, I don't believe it to be original to the gun.

A five pointed star was stamped on rejected Krieghoffs too, although an East Indies Luger I'm sure hasn't much to do with Krieghoff.
We would need some close up pictures please.

Best.

I realize I was very unclear in my original post. The Luger is marked 42 on top of the toggle and E/655 on the side of slide. All numbers match except the takedown. The barrel though has no marks except the star on top.

This star is under the barrel of my Mauser C96, right in front of the chamber.

This star must carry different meaning from the star on Lugers. It's not a rework indicator. It associated with Red 9 barrel, probably used as an indicator to tell it's a 9x19mm barrel. None of thousands of various kinds of 7.63mm barrels that I have met having this, and none of hundreds of 9mm barrels that I have met not having this. If that's indeed the way it is, then, this star was still related with a change, a factory change in this context.

Default 7.63 c96

I just photographed an Imperial accepted 7.63 C96 for a dealer friend. It's in the 284K range. It's all matching except locking block and has the star.

Alvin,

My C96 is in 7.63 x 25 (.30 Luger). All matching, serial # 2919XX

Thanks for the pictures. So, the star is still a myth. It's associated with 1916-1918 wartime made pistols. As a very generic marking, it probably associated with certain barrel acceptance procedure.

Many 1896 Mausers have a star on the bottom of the barrel,
likely the mark of some inspector, JMHO. In my experience, it is not found on just 9mms.

So true. It is found on 7.63mm guns as well. I have two BHs with such stars under the barrel.

Also, I think the two stars on these C96 barrels were six pointed.
He's asked about a 5 pointed star, in particular.

The M-star is very common on C96 barrels. FWIW my 1910 Mauser side latch also has the star stamping. Would have to check if it's 5 or 6 pointed.

Enclosed are pictures of a star on the spine of a S9805 bayonet. I have had this bayonet for many years and the star still remains a mystery. I have seen it on other edge weapons.

There is also a 5, and what appears to be an R and a script J on the bottom of the barrel. I have yet to find anything on these markings.
