7.65mm (.30) Luger Ammunition

Does any company manufacture 7.65mm ammo for the Luger CURRENTLY ?

I found some old Winchester 7.65mm at a recent gun show, but the box indicated that it was manufactured in 1981.

Winchester and Fiocchi currently produce the 7.65 Parabellum cartridge. "Currently" means they run of a batch about once every two years. There are a couple of small custom loaders producing it also.

For 'vintage" commercial ammo the Remington or Peters may be the best load, not quite so underloaded as the Winchester or Fiocchi.

The Fiocchi will be cheaper, but it is very underloaded. Winchester costs more, and is also underloaded, but not quite so much as the Fiocchi.

On June 27 I posted about a loader that I found that loads for this cartridge. His rounds work perfectly in my 1906 and a Mauser from the 1970's.

Check that post and contact him if you cannot find a local source at a reasonable price.

Thanks for your comments. I have found Fiocchi for $16.45 per 50 round box, so I will give that a try.

I recently was some Finish 7,65 mm Parabellum advertised. For the life of me cannot remember who was offering it. I believe it was Lapua 1980 vintage commericlaly packaged. I know Samco in Flordia sell the military packaged stuff. The finish stuff ir berdan primed non-corrosive.

Thanks for your reply. Since I first posted I have bought some of the Fiocchi ammo which is priced about the same as the Finnish ammo. It shoots well in my 7.65 1920 Commercial DWM.

Unspellable, what does the Winchester 93 grain loading chronograph for you. I am setting up a 1920 Commercial and need a duplicate loading with Hornady 30 Luger 93 gr bullet and Unique powder. I am thinking around 5.5 grs might be about right. Does the Winchester loading use a .308" diameter bullet?

Thor, the Winchester bullet has a nominal diameter of 0.309" with max at 0.309" and min at 0.306". Those I have measured ran pretty close to 0.309". (Fiocchi runs a 0.308' bullet.) the velocity at about six feet from the muzzle ran 1176 fps from my six inch Mauser re-intro and around 1090 fps from a couple of my four inch vintage M1920's. I'm quoting off the top of my head. I'll see if I can find the exact figures when I get home tonight. I've had a hard drive crash which kind of messed up my records.

OK! First, don't take any deals on cheap thermal printer paper! A lot of my chronograph printouts have faded until they are unreadable. I'm going back to quality paper! Here are some surviving notes.

Winchester claims 1220 fps from a 4.5 inch SAAMI pressure barrel. THe original DWM specs for the 1920 commercial call for 1220 fps from a 98 mm barrel (slightly less than 4 inches.), the actual pistol, not a test barrel. The SAAMI test barrel is, among other things, bored to the minimum SAAMI diminsions for chamber and groove diameter. In addition to diminsional differences, you can knock 10 to 15 fps off the fixed test barrel figures for operating the pistol action. You can add 2 to 3 fps to my measurements to correct for the difference bewteen muzzle velocity and the five foot trap distance. You will note that in the range from 3.5 to 5.5 inches the barrel length makes a noticable difference in velocity.

I found in my notes:

Average of 1048.3 fps from a 4 inch DWM mismatch.

Average of 1184.3 fps from a 42 Mauser apparently rebarreled to 7.65. This one has a like new bore.

Average of 1196.0 fps from a 6 inch Mauser re-intro in as new condition.

I have other records that I haven't found yet.
