Default I would REALLY like to know?

Every sense I had been in to Luger collecting I had always looked for any books or "Detailed" reference material on the proofs on the in side of these Lugers such as (J's, Q's, r's, S's, X's, Star's, Eagles, and even Iron Crosse like proofs ) other that just labeled " acceptance stamps" anybody have any idea's? Harry Jones has some inside the frame well proof markings but they are limited to identifying manufacture! The information is dated also, circa 1959

Jesse;

Welcome to the lugerforum!

In answer to your question:

1) Have you looked at the "Technical Information" page of this site? There is considerable information here!

2) Check out the "Links & Resources" page since it is a source of valuable information including book sources and those links which lugerforum recommends are flagged with an "*".

3) The following books are recommended reading:

"The Luger Book" and "German Military Handguns 1879-1918" both by by John Walter; "Imperial Lugers and Their Accessories", "Weimar Lugers And Early Nazi Lugers And Their Accessories", "THIRD REICH LUGERS And Their Acessories", "AXIS PISTOLS And Their Accessories" all by Jan Still; " La connaissance du Luger" by G©rard Henrotin; "Lugers of Ralph Shattuck" by Ralph Shattuck. There are many more books and If I think of them I will post for you.

Regards;

Default Jesse, I think the best one is -

World of Lugers by Sam Costanza. While it may be a little hard to use at times, I think it is pretty good. Next I guess I would go with The Luger Book by John Walter. LOL

Jesse is an old timer (but a young fellow) he has been following the forum longer than me, but he is a less frequent poster than he used to be. Thor

Apparently Sam had intentions of putting out a series of "World of Luger" books. His "Proof Marks" is listed as Volume I. I am not sure how Costanzo's book stands up to the contention that only the firing proof can be called a proof.

Hey, No problem at all! Jesse is in the Rouges Gallery so you can see how young he is, good to see new blood like him and Wombat! Jesse and I go way back when he was asking me about Luger with all kind of markings we were asking Ralph and other experts about it! He is quite an accomplished pistol shot and has won some target shoots.....yes with a Luger! Ol Georg would have been proud!! Jesse is a college student and a newly wed so he doesnt have as much time for the forum as he used to! I consider him a good friend and hope he finds time to chime in more! I REALLY hope to meet him at Ralphs next spring for our annual get together (Luger Forum at WOL) "A convention of fun". Glad you are with us too Robert and can give us the prospective from the Candian side! Jerry Boyle is another individual that has contributed a lot to the forum and I dont see him on here hardly at all! I miss Jerry and wish he could go to Ralphs too, he has expressed much admiration for him! Hell......let's all met at Ralph's.....man will that be a trip! ~Thor~

Jesse,

Maybe a year or so ago, one of the members of NAPCA was doing research on the front frame well markings of Imperial Lugers. He stated that they were inspectors marks, but did not give any type identification for them. One of the things his research showed was that that the pistol frame could be dated within a certain time period for certain inspectors marks.

Having been in the equipment engineering business for years, we always used inspection stamps very similar to those in the Luger. The stamps themselves was just an indication that a particular operation had been checked and had passed the inspection process. These were internal inspections only and the military inspection stamps we are all familiar with were for the Government only to show they met the more strict requirements of the military. As we know, the rejected military parts were utilized in the commercial pistols.

I would also like to put in a "Plug" for NAPCA again. This is a great research organization where the new pistol collectors can interact with the more knowledgeable collectors. It is a good organization.

Jesse & Marvin, I too recall one of the NAPCA members publishing something in the Automag years ago on PO8 frame well markings, basical which marking he observed in which years DWMs and Erfurts. I think that the question boils down to which inspector used which symbol and what tolerences did they measure. Unfortunately, most of us don't care.

Default Me Too

Have always wondered what those inspection marks indicate. Be interested if someone could find the Auto Mag article and post it for everyone to read.
