Post What a day !

Just found this forum and expect to be back a lot...

Took my wife to a local shop to buy a second can of black powder. While there I showed her an artillery in the pistol case that I've been admiring. Her response? "why don't you get it?"

I filled out the paper work and left in a daze. Later I started getting my brain in gear and a lot of questions started popping up.

For starters, what parts should be straw color?

The piece is dated 1917 with ser. no. 1717 (thus parts are marked 17) The price? $1717 of course.

I invite opinions and my feelings are not easily hurt. I've pretty much made up my mind that I will keep it.

Thanks for listening. <img src="graemlins/icon107.gif" border="0" alt="[icon107]" />

Hi Ron, Welcome to the Forum, always glad to see new faces!!! <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

There are five pieces that should be strawed, these are the take down lever, trigger, magazine release button, safety lever and ejector.

If you could post a photo(s) you might get some opinions (maybe good and bad) <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Welcome!

An artillery was my first, albeit a bit reblued [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

So, Can you tell us any markings on the gun?

Proofs? (see on your left under tech information if you came through www.lugerforum.com) Tell us what and where proofs and markings are located.

There are forms in this section, where you can print out and then write down pertinent information.

What serial number suffix is on the gun? To include any letters next to or under the serial number?

What initials or letters are on the toggle?

Can you provide pictures, to include side, top, etc? We are more than willing to help out posint if you would like!

SubVet, Congratulations on your recent acquisition! And your membership here on the Forum. We hope you will return often and it sounds like you have a keeper with that Wife of yours! I too am interested to know if there is a letter suffix below the serial number. I just purchased an artillery with the serial number 1716 b . Matching magazine too. about 98% original blue and paid $1200 cash. Thought I got a bargain. Let me know the details..Jerry Burney

Hello Ron,

Welcome to the Forum.

I will assume your Arty is by "DWM" and not by "Erfurt". Erfurt arty's are usually only dated 1914 (with a controversial one or two pistols bearing a 1915 and a 1917 date). DWM was the predominant maker of the Arty's.

If your piece is close to the Arty that Jerry just described, I think it will usually fetch between $ 1600-2000 here in CA-State.

I mention this, as I see from your profile you live in No. California.

I think Jerry was very lucky to get a very excellent deal, that I just do not see here in CA-State...

$ 1200 normally fetches a worn Arty, at 50-60% bluing and very little straw left...and a pretty worn barrel bore.

And yes, what a wonderful wife you describe...!

p.s. I use the term "Arty" as a slang for Artillery; which is officially known as the Lange Pistole or LP-08 model...Some folks here do not like the term "Arty"...

Regards,

Pete... <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

Welcome to the forum sir, keep in mind many of these folks have been active students of Lugers for a very long time, don't let the initial information overload overshadow your enthusiasm of the historic and engineering marvel you have purchased. Reading a Luger is like reading a book that can shoot very well. You just have to learn the language, or better yet, find those who can read it until you learn it yourself.

Welcome to our happy little forum! I too have an artillery although it is an Erfurt mismatch but still nice to have. Please read the link for "left grip warning". The left grip is easy to break when you remove it. Please post some pictures. A flatbed scanner works fairly well even if the whole length of the arty will not fit.
