Post Artillery Luger's

I watched a movie this morning that had a bunch of art.luger action in it, pretty cool. The most I've ever seen lugers on the Tube (aside from Tales of the Gun). The movie was THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT ,starred Doug Mclure, B flik from hell. Worth watching just to see the guns.

Hey Ted,

Me thinks you watch too many movies...Wow ! What a list !

Regards,

Pete...

We started compiling this list two years ago, I did only a little work on it, others really should take the credit for the compilation. Just goes to show you, Lugers are everywhere! I have NOT seen all these movies, but that IS a good plan!

Just thought I'd mention again a great book called "War of the Rats" that has a very accurate depiction of the german assault on Stalingrad and a duel between germany's best sniper and russia's Zaitsev. That movie is called "Enemy at the gates" and is quite good also, but doesn't do the book justice. Just read it again in fact. Well worth the read but only a small reference to lugers.

In Remarque's sequel to "All Quiet on the Western Front", a book called "Three Comrades", I found it interesting that the handgun mentioned in it was the Reich's revolver.

One of their former company members, a LT. who had rissen from the ranks IIRC, found out his wife was seeing another man. The LT. finally found the man in a beerhall. As the LT. drew his revolver, the man attempted to shield himself with a chair. According to the story, there was no one in the company better with the issue revolver than the LT who placed his shot 1" higher than the chair and in the center of the man's forehead.

To the movie list add 1978's "The Big Sleep" starring Robert Mitchum as Philip Marlowe. In one scene Malowe opens a sliding tray in the dash of his Mercedes (he's in England at the time) and removes a Luger which he sticks in his belt. He doesn't get to use it as he's knocked unconscious and later retrieves the second handgun from the tray...... what appears to be a S&W revolver. He uses the revolver to kill a bad guy, Richard Boone.

Unhappy

Plot for ANZACs-Following the lives of a dozen Australian soldiers who served in the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during World War I which follows them from the 1915 battle of Galipoli, to the brutal trenches of France during the 1916 Somme battles, the 1917 Arias and Vimy Ridge battles to the final 1918 German offensives and the final victory drive as well as the hardships, mid-adventures and the casualties of friends encounted at each one.
I dont see it offered on VHS or DVD, I guess it will be catch as catch can to see it. HEY....I just found out blockbuster offers it for rent!ANZACs at Blockbuster

Another film with a Luger in it is 'Freaks' , Tod Brownings 1932 MGM film .

In it a Luger is wielded by Johnny Eck ( billed as the Half-Boy in the credits ) . Eck was born without a lower body and his real name was John Eckhardt .

An area of interest of mine , I have more books on Freaks than on Lugers .

The Luger looks like the standard 4" bbl type .

Stevie if you have the tape of the movie, maybe it is possible to capture some little parts of it in digital format and share with us your pleasure.
Ciao

Sorry Mouro, I don't have tapes or dvds of either of the movies I mentioned. There is a website where Tapes and dvds are cheap, I'll see if they are available.

One more of Super interest for the Luger...Stars Gary Cooper as a bachelor professor. Pre WWII, probably mid '30's. It's a humorous farce involving mob types.

Near the end of the film two thugs hold Cooper and his fellow profs at gun point.

The guns are a C96 with stock and an LP08 with stock. Pandamonium breaks loose and the thugs start firing the pistols.

They are both FULL-AUTO.

What's the title of this film?

Cool

Does this sound like the plot? It has the word Mob and shooting gallery? I guess not, no mention of professors in this one. Also in CASANOVA BROWN Cooper plays a professor.
Nan, a racketeer's daughter, is in love with The Kid, a shooting gallery showman. Despite Nan's prodding, The Kid has no ambitions about joining the rackets and making enough money to support Nan in the lifestyle she's accustomed to. Her attitude changes after her father implicates her in a murder and she's sent to prison. During her incarceration, her father convinces The Kid to join the gang in order to help free Nan. When Nan is released, she wants nothing more to do with the mob and tries to get The Kid to quit, but she may be too late.

Much easier to pull an image off a DVD, like ol Robert Vaughn firing a P.38

Have you ever noticed the genteel bad types have Lugers but the creepy bad types have Broomhandles?

In the movie, "Rocketeer", towards the end of the movie, you will see a crowd of bad guys with P38's. Interesting in view of the fact that the movie is set in the time period prior to the outbreak of WWII. They should'er had Lugers.

There's a technical term for something that appears in a book or movie before it historically should. I've forgotten what it's called but I think even Shakespear used items out of time in his plays.

Thumbs up

Guys
I've noticed many episodes of 'Get Smart' (yes it's STILL on TV down here)have Lugers in them. They are always being brandished by the KAOS guys along with other assorted firearms. I saw an episode the other day (yes we're still wathing them down here too ) where there was a really good closeup of Max with a rather nice looking P08 being held to his head.

Cheers
Ken

I recall an episode of "Get Smart" where Max and a Russian agent are emptying their pockets of all their concealed weapons. A wide array of firearms were produced and at one point Max pulls out a Borchardt!
