Welcome to the Lugerforum Walter.

My advice... Keep it clean... Keep the moving parts Lubricated (with Breakfree). Keep it in a low humidity place... and SHOOT IT LESS...

If it is really a fine matching Luger... why take more chance than you have to. Get yourself a mismatched "shooter" to put all those rounds through and preserve your current Luger.

Even if one small piece breaks... you will almost cut the value in half when you replace it.

The choice is up to you... The most likely pieces to break? The extractor, ejector and firing pin... If you must shoot it, get replacements now and install them before your shooting sessions.

Hello Walter,

Well it comes down to this:

1. Shoot light loads that still function in it

2. If it is all matching, it is worth around $800 - $1200 dollars (probably more, all depends on condition, rarity, blah, blah), so if you break a numbered part, value drops to around $500.

3. I would shoot her, but be tempted to buy a "shooter" Luger to fire...

We love pictures and any history for the gun?

No matter what you do to a shooter status gun you can never return it to the collector category. You can however change a collector gun into a shooter with the pull of its trigger. Get a shooter for shooting.

Hey Walt,
Another approach is to buy new the SN parts that break (as listed above) remove and save the originals and install the new pieces and have fun.
But fer gawdssake, don't be shootin' a nice matched piece. There is a small and finite quantity extant; don't reduce the population by going to the range.
