Where does a person obtain EURO currency here in the U.S.?

Hey Wes,

Most of the major local banks will have it, or a local AMEX office. If that fails, the Airport Money Exchange booths, but they are a rip-off (so beware)...

Why do you want it here? If you are going to Europe it is Cheaper to use an ATM there to get Euros. Bob Benson

You almost always need to call around, the larger banks will order it for you, and as fg42 said, I have just taken it out at the local ATMs. BUT, I have also had the misfortune of one ATM card not working, while another one would, a bit sticky if you are in the middle of Deutchland. So, what I do is try and get some ahead of time, have some US money on you and then take some out via an ATM when you have the opportunity.

Hi Ed,

As you know - most European businesses also take the US $. The only problem I had was in France, in the Alps at a local hotel - where the owner didn't take much to "outsiders". Fortunatly, I was able to remember enough French to curse her out in her own language - which instantly made me a celebrity, both in her eyes and the local township ("an American who can SWEAR in FRENCH??"). We spent 2 days in that village (total population was less then 50 folks). That next night - I learned what "Nuit Blanche" was all about...

So - forget the cash - and pack a good dictionary - it'll get you farther...

Wes, I usually just take travelers checks, good anywhere and easily exchanged at any Euro bank or the little 'cambios'.

And as John stated, "trying" to speak the langauge got me many kudo's from the locals. They might laugh, but it was in fun and they appreciate the trying. Just the merci' danke, danku wel, etc., helps a lot,
