Awhile back Hugh graciously posted picts of his receiver wrenches. After looking at them I was able to make a version from a convenient piece of 3/4in. x 1.5in. bar of aluminum. The handle part is 18in. long.
The receiver is from a Russian import with a pitted and worn barrel. You can still see the original reddish hue on the receiver. The serial is 34xx v. I have a nice original finish 1939 42code (37xx v) also with the reddish/plumb hue. I haven't decided on a barrel yet. Thanks for posting those picts Hugh. http://http://boards.rennlist.com/up...raigwrench.jpg |

Hi Rick,
I did use a Bridgport mill then filed for the final fit. The fit is pretty close with the sides and lug supporting the receiver. I don't have a sight pusher, yet. By the way, this was my first attempt at posting a picture. I think I can get it right next time. Thanks, Craig |

Gentlemen;
I'm no gunsmith, but I find this thread quite interesting. I would like to know as much as possible about how to change a barrel on a P.08, what tools are necessary and whether any custom mondifications would need to be done to achieve proper results. I have a naval barrel in my possession and hope some day to find a frame I can use it on. Of course this is all dependant on whether this is something I should even consider doing myself. Any explanations of the proces, suggestions/comments would be appreciated. You may wish to start a new thread on this item or post in the Technical Information section of this site (DOK...what do you say?) Regards to all; |

Robert, another thread may well be in order. I've built a barrel vise and the receiver wrench but so far have only unscrewed the one barrel. There are others better qualified to help. I'd like to hear more on this subject too.

Precisely why I haven't done it, but that doesn't prevent me from being curious about the process. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has worked on barrel replacement on more than one P.08. I have heard that the fit is not identical between different barrels and receivers.
Thanks for your cautionary note. It is appreciated. Regards; |

Havw removed and replaced Luger barrels for many years for others and myself. With care and right tools this can be done without a scratch to even a mint finish. Most important is right tools and carefullllllwork. I do not know of any off the shelf tools. I made my own long age then improved on that. Toughest part is holding barrel. The subject of makeing tools [wthout a mill] is lengthy and impossible with out including sketches. If you have A drill press and can tap holes --you can make the tools. For those who are dead serious about this subject; I will be pleased to share sketches of tools and give detailed info by some other medium.

is not a job for amators. I've probably install over a 100 in the last 20 years, but it's one of my least favorite jobs, as no two seem to fit the same. Since the new production barrels are not index marked, it requires several adjustments to get the extractor groove and front sights to line up just right with the receiver, and many of these new barrels are short chamber and need a final chamber ream after installation, not to mention a ramp job for consistent function. So unless you have the proper receiver wrench, barrel vise, finish reamers, and a lot of insurance, I don't recommend it.

Gentlemen;
Thanks for your input. All very good comments and appreciated. I certainly wouldn't undertake it myself since I don't have the equipment to do it or make the tools. I'm just generally interested in furthering my knowledge of the process. I will e-mail art directly for any futher data and also welcome any e-mails to me from any other interested parties who are willing to elaborate. Thanks folks. |
