Smile Ivory grips

Guys
Came across this during my E travels.
Boone Trading
Seems that they can supply Luger grips made from "cultured ivory" (powdered ivory mixed with epoxy) and many others made from real ivory.
Might be good for tarting up that old 4 inch...

Question

Just curious......... is there a market for genuine ivory Luger grips? They would be much more expensive than the "polymer ivory" or "cultured ivory"! <img border="0" alt="[king]" title="" src="graemlins/r.gif" />

At the cost of ivory, who do you think could afford it ?
A guy or gal with a job is hard pressed just to have a hobby, at least I am with 2 teenagers and a wife.
Or, are they supposed to be my hobby since they all cost so much?????????????

Real ivory is a pretty expensive way to go. At a recent gun show, I saw a pair of plain ivory Luger grips with a price tag of $350. The grips I have are a post war (WWII) set made up for a GI by an unknown Japanese artisan. They portray the dragon of peace (closed mouth) and the dragon of war (open mouth). Don't know what they are worth, but I value them at around $500.

Those are really nice Ron! I know, some won't like them, but I think I like the dragons on them ~~

Hi Hugh,

I LOVE real ivory grips, I just don't think I can afford them for a Luger...or any other gun I own for that matter...even for just display. I would be afraid that shooting a Luger wearing those might crack the grips... and that would HURT.

I own one gun that has genuine ivory grips. A Colt Peacemaker in .44-40. The gun was a gift from my in-laws. It had been in their family since it was new...(1884 I think) and I have the shoulder holster it was carried in to protect the family store in southwestern Missouri. They had two sons but neither liked guns so they gave it to ME! God is good and he smiled on me that day! The great aunt that was living at the time I received the gun (she was 89 at the time) told me that she remembered that her father took the gun out of the cedar chest on November 11, 1918 and fired all the ammunition they had in the house at the time up in the air to celebrate the armistice for WW1. Then (without cleaning the gun!) he put it back in the holster and back in the cedar chest where it remained until it was given to me around 1984...The grips are original. I love the way they feel in my hand.

When I get a chance I will post a photo of the gun...my digital camera is down and I will have to use the scanner... I did a lot of work to make the gun look presentable... it was pretty rusty after sitting with black powder corrosion in that cedar chest for all those years. The grips have a nice yellow color to them. my preference would be for smoothe ones instead of carved or inlaid designs in case you are taking notes on what to give me for Christmas

You mean...like THEEEES??

Its my 5" Thor-Heller gun, which you've heard about before. Got the ivories at a gun show for, judging by Ron's info, an embarressingly low price (ivory mag bottom came later, courtesy of my friend Russ Withem).

The grip ivory is harder than blazes. I have no qualms about shooting the gun (the grips sure do feel nice) without worry about cracking them--its not my primary shooter, but I like to have it on the shooting bench to see what kind of glances it gets from other shooters walking by (not much pride of ownership here, no sirree!! )

I don't think I'd shoot Ron's dragon grips, though...

Hey that looks nice! Great matching of colors. {{Although I am already "marked", as is Hugh and Dwight as lovers of this ilk..}}.

John, that is indeed good luck to have that SAA with ivory grips. I have a 45 with smooth ivories and they really set it off. Ivory and stag are my two favorite pistol and knife handle materials. It won't be long before the stag is as expensive as the ivory, since they quit importing it several years ago.

Those are beautiful grips that Ron has, there was a similar pair on ebay recently, I believe they sold for around $350.

I am still envious of Dwight's gun show find, he got a real bargain there!

I love ivory as well. I have a 1911 in 38 Super with smooth ivory grips and my initials scrim'ed in. Looks too cool. I had them made by Boone trading. The guy's name is David ( if I remember ) and at the time, I had asked him if he could do a set for a luger. I was thinking they would look good on a stainless, but I've changed my mind... Ivory and blue is better. Anyway, he told me they'd never done luger grips and he wasn't willing to try to copy a set of wooden grips. I have looked for quite some time and found no one who does ivory luger grips. If anyone on this forum has had a set made, please contact me, I'd like to know who does em. By the way, The ones sold on eBay recently were grip safety grips and I passed on them because the gun I wanted them for is a plain jane S/42.

Pete,
Thanks, I'll give these guys a call on Monday. I looked at the web page and was (momentarily!) tempted to order a set of scales and try to make them myself. Too expensive to screw up. I posted a pic of my .38. I think there's nothing like ivory grips. Remember General Patton "They're ivory. Only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans whorehouse would carry a pearl handled revolver".

The right grip on this gun is on the Boone Trading Company web page (under examples of custom scrimshaw) referenced in the first post in this thread.
