Early Pigskin LP08 Holster
Dear Friends,
I am very glad to show you this very interesting and rare early soft pigskin holster and magazine pouch for LP08. You can find other examples of these holsters in the Bender book at page 230-231, in the Still Imperial Luger book at page 111 and in my book â??La Luger Artiglieriaâ? at page 55. The main characteristics of these holsters are: 1. The front is made in pigskin and the back in smooth cowhide; 2. The cleaning rod and the take-down tool are carries inside. FRONT: http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p1-1.jpg FRONT ZOOM: http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p2.jpg BACK: http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p4.jpg POUCHS FOR ROD AND TAKE-DOWN TOOL http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p8.jpg As far as my holster and magazine pouch concern, this is the only example I know where both items are made in pigskin and also they belong to the same rig. In fact both the holster and the pouch are marked: Eugen Huber Militar Effekten Munchen And also they present the acceptance mark: AWM/1/15 (Artillerie Werkstatten Munich, first workgroup 1915). HOLSTER MARKS: http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p5.jpg POUCH MARKS: http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p6.jpg http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/p7.jpg I am very interested on this kind of holsters and I would like receiving your opinion on the following topic. If you look at the following pictures you can recognise an extra-rare very early pigskin arty holster used as a pistol/stock carrier with several magazines and the cleaning rod and the screwdriver placed inside. (This kind of holster were maybe used for the pre-production acceptance, see â??Luger: the multinational pistolâ? at page 94-95 and my book at page 30-31-32). Actually the holster above HAS THE SAME MARKS OF MY PIGSKIN HOLSTER. http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/holster1.jpg http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/holster2.jpg http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/holster3.jpg It means that at the beginning of 1915, Eugen Huber made three different kinds of arty holsters: 1. The pigskin holster used as a pistol/stock carrier; 2. The pigskin holster like my holster; 3. The usual one My questions are: why this maker made three different types of holster? Are the soft pigskin holster made for high officers? Actually I believe that the pigskin is too soft for the trench quality of life!!! Please let me know your opinion. Ciao

Mauro, The only pigskin LPO8 holsters that I've seen with the unusual top flap construction, were also AWS/1915 dated. TH

Very interesting. Actually I believe that the pig-skin holster were made only at the end of 1914 and during 1915. Should be interesting to do a "census" of these holsters in order to clarify when and who made them.

Based on the points and images that Mauro has provided, it would be interesting to discover the connection between Eugen Huber (Militar Effekten, Munchen) and AWM. Recently, I saw a WWI P08 holster which was marked Eugen Huber, Militar Effekten, Munchen but without the AWM markings. This makes me believe that Eugen Huber submitted various holster and pouch designs to AWM which was some sort of evaluating board for the German Artillery (please refer to the long debate on the 1913 LP08 which was on this forum which yielded some excellent opinions).
I agree with Mauro that his type of holster was not made for war use or the trenches and it was probably made for a different purpose/reason. Although this early pigskin holster is dated 1915 and the early Mauser style stock carrying pouch was dated 1914, it should be noted that the German Artillery first tested/fired the LP08 pistol in 1913 without a flatboard stock even if the blueprints of the transitional LP08 pistols show the pistol with a stock lug, flatboard stock and holster. For your information, I have seen a copy the blueprints which are in the archives of Mr. Krommeyer and I believe his information to be correct. It could be logically possible that Eugen Huber was providing holsters based on special order or evaluation/trial purposes. The opinion and comments of other LP08 collectors and experts would be welcomed. Cheers, Albert |
