Default What is this marking on DWM "S.A. 14. "

I have been looking at a 1921 DWM for sale with S.A.14. stamped on the grip strap. What is this mark for? Thanks.

S.A.XIV would indicate that it was a Prussian Municipal Police Pistol from the fourteenth district or command area of Aurich. If the 14 is not Roman numerals but Arabic then they would refer to pistol number 14 of the Aurich police unit.

Hi David, -- are you sure the markings aren't A.S.14 -- The one I'm looking at is A.S.14 instead of S.A.14 -- If it's A.S.14 it is "Artillery School weapon number 14".

Also, you have to give us more on the gun when requesting these translations as a gun with a sear safety translate completely differently than a gun without a sear safety.

For instance, the S.A.14 could have several different meaning-- a police translation and an Imperial translation. In this case, the date 1921 rules out an Imperial translation, but not an Weimar army translation. Hope this helps some.

Yup, the Weimar police translation is only one possibility. With a sear safety it could easily be a police issue (I think most police have sear safeties). I wonder why they worried so much about the police (who were supposedly trained)as opposed to the civilian? Admittedly, there weren't many civilians allowed to own firearms in Germany at that time.
