Question 1940 Code 42 again!

I went to see a couple of pistols lately, Mausers for the most part...

The facts are that about 1/3 of those are 1940 Code 42....I already have 2 very nice ones and NO I'm not looking to get a 3rd one!

How come do I come across so many of those?
Anybody has production figures?

Is that one made in that much greater quantities than, let's say a 1938 S/42?

Could it be this theory as to:

1- where a specific batch of Lugers was sent ( Unit & location )...

2- which Allied Units were there?

3- Those specific pistols( 1940 42 for example ) were the ones that were brought back by vets......
