Post More American Eagle Proof Survey

First, continued thanks to everyone who has participated.

After working with and considering the data a bit, I've decided that I am interested in more than just the proof marks, and more than just American Eagles. These guns represent only a part of the Commercial serial number range, and from such a limited sample one cannot get an overall picture of early Lugers.

So, I am asking for more information, from an expanded vaariety of Lugers. In addition to American Eagles, I am looking for Commercial, Swiss Commercial 1900 and 1906 (-not- the Swiss military contract series), 1900 Bulgarian, 1906 Navy Commercial, and anything else 1900-1906 which came from the Commercial serial number series.

The additional information I am looking for, from 1900 model: -full- serial number, proof marks or absence of same, Swiss cross on the barrel, whether the grip safety is wide (full grip strap width) or narrow (half-width), which type of thumb safety lever (type 1, flat-checkered; type 2, raised checkered; type 3, raised fluted), where the takedown lever is numbered (right end, left face, bottom), and if the gun is GERMANY marked.

From 1902 model: -full- serial number, proof marks or absence of same, whether the grip safety is wide or narrow, which type of thumb safety lever, where the takedown lever is numbered, and if the gun is GERMANY marked.

From 1906 model: -full- serial number, proof marks or absence of same, if the gun is 9mm, and if the gun is GERMANY marked.

As before, I will maintain anonymity of the samples. Please send your information to mailto:dwightg@pacifier.comdwightg@pacifier.com</a>

Below you will find the results of the survey thus far. I have tried to find a format which will work with the Forum and make sense. The information is drawn from many different sources, not all of which provide all the characteristics I seek. The vertical hash marks represent No Data.

I find it interesting that there are no 1900's in the 11000,12000,15000,16000,17000 serial ranges. Wonder where these went to.

Steve,

It is only that here are no American Eagles in my survey in those serial ranges, and this is exactly why I want to expand the survey to non-AE Commercials and the other models I mentioned.

Also, this is a very small sample of the guns produced--less than .5%--and not enough guns have been reported to start populaating those statistical niches.

Which is why I'm desperate for more people to send me information for the survey, if it is going to have any relevance in the long run.

Steve, Dwight,

I think that part of the range was used for general commercial sales between 1900 and 1902. These may be commercially marketed everywhere and some may even be rerouted for test/acceptance purposes, being simply lifted from commercial stock.

Dwight, check the Member Gallery... I remember that there is an album there created by me regarding a commercial 1900 that was owned by Robert Musgrave... There are also a lot of other albums with 1900 commercials shown. Perhaps some of the answers to your survey might be found there.

If the information about the true owner of the guns is not found there, send me a private message about which ones have potential, and I will attempt to reseach what I can about the owners of the photos.

John,

A good idea. I had gone through it when I was doing the short version of the survey, I just went through it again looking for the extended models and characteristics. I was able to get quite a bit of what I am looking for out of it. I am way shy of grip safety width data, the standard photographic angles do not include this feature.

Thanks for the reminder.

1902 AE 230xx has BU on left side of slide, B on left toggle in front of link pin and BU on left side of toggle. BUG underside of barrel.

The barrel markings have a number between the proof marks and serial number. The arrangements looks like this:

BG
U
118,35

230xx

Randolph,

The information is appreciated, but only useful if you report the full serial number. If you do not want to do so in public, email me directly dwightg@pacifier.com
