Vet Bringback...have questions

Hey Gang,

My Grandfather was an officer and a MP in the 3rd Army who unfortunately did not survive the war. His wife (my Grandmother) was also in the military. Fortunately for my father and me he was a gun nut and and grabbed several firearms over the course of the war which my Grandmother brought back with her. She was a secretary with the tribunal in Nuremberg and lived there with my father (as a child) until the early 50s iirc.

Anyways one of the guns is a P-08 with holster and mag, matching numbers but I can't seem to find any information about it.

There are no markings on the chamber but the front strap says L.Li.76. Proof marks are an N with a crown over it. Original condition id mark at an honest un-refinished 95%. Slight blueing wear to the front and rear straps on the grip but thats it...not so much as a buggered screw. What can you guys tell me about the gun and what should i declare its value to the insurance company? Serial no. 8006

He also brought back a p38, PPK and cz mod 24 with Nazi proofs but I've had more luck finding information about those.

Anything would be helpful

Mr. Joe,

There are a multitude of folks here that are willing to help. The best way to do that is post some pics. I use my phone and e-mail them to my addy, save them on my computer and post the pics to the Forum. Easy-peezy. Good clear, in focus with close-ups are the best. Hope to see them soon.

I believe your P08 is a police gun unit marked to the Landjaegerei Liegnitz district. Photos would be helpful.

It a police unit marking from around 1932 Landjägerei Liegnitz wafffen (weapon) 76

It likely has a sear safety (see FAQ for pictures of the sear safety)

Thanks guys! Do you think this gun was put into service by the wiermacht or volkstrom? It's possible he snagged it from a smokey as he himself was a mp...what do you think?

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

It was not an army accepted Luger. That would have had different proofs. It may have found it's way to the Wehrmacht or an informal unit. Generally, people in a war zone are not that fussy about where they acquire their firearms...

Post some pictures and we'll have better information. You have not even mentioned who manufactured the Luger (DWM, Erfurt, Simson, Mauser?)... With the Crown/N proof, it would have initially been sold commercially.

Don't store these guns in their holsters. It can lead to finish deterioration.

We have a rather complete FAQ document that can help answer many of your questions.

In my mind looks like a 1929 DWM or "Sneak Luger" with blank toggle.
This would explain the C/N proof and the police unit mark.
Pictures would help.
