My Family P-08 Luger

This was brought back from World War One, along with his issued Colt 1911.

It's been in my family since then.

Until today, I haven't shot it since I was a kid.

I ran a few rounds through it, and other than one FTF, it ran great.

Needs a good cleaning, but I thought I'd post a few pics first.

Collectors, any info would be appreciated.

It will remain in my Family, to be passed down to each generation.

IF you ever want to shoot it again, buy a MecGar brand magazine because those old wooden-based ones might let go under spring tension.

Nice pistol, good you are going to keep it in the family.

You have a "standard" WWI issue P 08, dates to 1916 as is obvious.
Post any specific questions, but do read the stickys for background info.

If I were you, I would go and ask Mrs Clause for a cheap shooter. One with no family historical value. It appears to be a matching, original piece. Show us mag bottoms, they should be sr# the same to gun. Screw this one up, and you will be logged in the family history book as the one who effed great grandpa's luger up. An excelent shooter can be had for under a grand, and you can shoot that until the thing is worn out without worry. Just my 2 cents. Great family treasure, thanks for sharing with us, and welcome. As has already been said, never shoot that puppy again. Preserve it. Get a nice shooter Luger and enjoy shooting it like you hate it. I did that and refrain from shooting my collector/investment grade Lugers.

Preserve that priceless (to your family) heirloom.

before yesterday, it hasn't been shot since the 1970's

I've had it locked up in my safe since my Dad passed away about 10 years ago.

I don't plan on shooting it much, I have plenty of newer guns to shoot.

numbers on the magazine bottoms do not match the SN.

Would be a nice project to find the mag(s) with SN 9799

Then you would have an matching 1916 DWM with matching mag- that would be a fine addition to the family treasure! Follow that with a period correct holster..... There's a listing of "orphaned mags" somewhere in this forum I believe- just for that reason...

I'm sure the owner of the 1916 DWM with the same SN as those SN's on your mags would be interested in your numbered mags to match up with his / her gun? That's why in my signature I have written "Looking for mag # 7097"

My father found an 1863 flintlock musket in his father's attic- which, of course, is in our family. I ended up restoring it.... found a bayonet, the proper flint, a sling, some inner parts... and learned all about that firearm in the process. Talked to experts in the field... I had no idea what I was getting into- and I had great fun doing it!

Very likely your Dad would be proud to see you put together a special rig with the starting 1916 P08 SN 9799.

Welcome Derek,

You have a standard German Army issue that is the 9799th Luger produced by DWM in 1916 (no suffix letter under the SN). It appears to be all original with I'm gonna say about 92% finish remaining and it has all of its original parts, at least what can be seen from the outside. Bore diameter is 8.82 mm. If you take the upper off, you can check the numbers on the : trigger, breechblock, firing pin, holdopen spring, and grip panels. I bet they match. Very nice undamaged walnut grips - well the left one is, you didn't show us the right grip.

Your gun is common but very collectible. It has enough wear on it that you don't need to baby it - just keep it oiled inside and out and it will last another 100 years. Very nice heirloom. It will never go down in value, and you can always shoot it if the %&#! hits the fan.

What numbers are on your magazines? A lot of us are looking to trade for certain numbers.
