new guy, 1940 p-08

hey there fellow Lugertarians. can someone tell me anything about my pistol besides the year it was made? like manufacturer, what service branch it came from, how much its worth, whether its worth holding on to, etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Made by Mauser in 1940. Looks in great condition. The 42 was code for Mauser.

I always call them 40/42's - I had one, it was was my 2nd luger - although mine was mismatched

worth depends on - fully matching? mag matching (unlikely) - any extras? extra mag, holster, tool?

Definitely above average condition. If matching except mag. gun only, maybe $1500'ish. Seems like a keeper to me.

it is all matching i think, the only part i cant verify are the grips, they have the eagle 655 proof marks on the inside but no numbers. i have 1 matching magazine and a few others that say made in denmark and one that looks like a wooden ww1 mag. no holster or tool

The grips with the eagle 655 proofs are probably original also seeing the fit and wear look good for the conditon of the Luger.
I surely would keep it.

well i dont really know anything about it. he never mentioned it to anyone, i found it in his closet in a shoe box, loaded ready to rock with the safety off. im considering selling it, just because i dont know the story behind it. it kind of pisses me off honestly. my grandpa watched me go through gunsmithing school and never even mentioned he had a nazi luger? .... not really that cool.

If your Grandfather obtained this in active service he may well of had memories that he didn't want to bring up again. Just seeing it or talking about it might have been painful. If it belonged to my Grandfather I would cherish it. Bill

Ditto to Bill. Grandpa meant you no disrespect by not mentioning it. Time will help you understand that. But you will never be able to replace that gun once it is gone. Please consider that carefully.

I disagree about its being sentimental. The grandfather may have won it in a card game, or taken it as collateral for a loan. I have done both with buddies when I was in the military. Guitars, watches, cameras, and stereo equipment mean nothing to me, so I wouldn't bother mentioning them to any of my heirs.

Being stuck in a shoebox in a closet indicates to me that your grandfather didn't have any attachment to it either. He obviously didn't value it.

If Lugers don't do anything for you, why keep it? It's not like you and your granddad have any shared memories of it.

I still have the JC Higgins bolt-action single-shot .22 that my mom & dad gave me for my 13th birthday (1963). I took it out last week and cleaned it up. I have a couple boxes of 'High Velocity' .22's that I want to get rid of. I plan on blowing them off when I'm alone at the [indoor] range. I'm not into .22 rifles anymore (sold my Winchester 52C some time back) so it doesn't really have any monetary value. But it's what my dad taught me to shoot with, and it was fun to plink with.

Loaded and not on safe means it was the grandfather's emergency kit... the non-descript shoebox it was found in was a means of hiding it in plain sight... The regular guy's equivilent of a safe.

Still was the grandfather's gun... a gun he trusted to turn to in a time of need. I still wouldn't sell it... just my $0.02

i see what you guys are saying. but what will i tell my kids if i pass it down? "hey this is grandpas old throwdown in case he ever got in trouble" or should i make up a story? "he karate chopped Rommel so hard that his luger fell out of its holster"


quick question: were lugers at the time issued with one or two matching magazines?
