Ron, Something I thought I once knew..but it escapes me. We know they are codes like the S code Krieghoff but were they simply snatched out of the alphabet? Interesting question!

As far as I know. And Krieghoff was just as guilty of that deception as Mauser.

From what I remember there was a chart of certain letters for dates - not just lugers had dates as letters / numbers and then later the 'codes' like S/42 / 42 / byf etc

gov't had things all planned out for the codes / dates

S - Krieg
K - Mauser
G - Mauser

Jerry, I think you nail it. There is no meaning with the letters. Background was to screen the rearmament after Hitler take the Power in 1933.

Maybe they used the enigma machine to sort them out.

The K,G & S code for 1934-1936, were also used on '98Ks until they went to open numeric dating in early 1936. TH

Gibson - page 106

these letter dates were the result of a gov't directed code intended to disguise the year of production as a means of circumventing the treaty of versailles. The letter designating a specific year was utilized by all manufactures.

Thor

You're showing us another thing of beauty, the photos of your restored Lugers are so beautiful that almost hurt me... :-)
