Default Horn for buttstocks

News to me. If so, then he must be working on my Navy rear sight down there! (lol). Just got an email advising me that he is finishing it up now and I should be receiving it "any day". Frankly, I don't care if he does it Florida, Eastern PA or Eastern Europe.

Incidentally, Lugerman (alleged warts and all) is a very gifted guy. Made sights and barrels for my carbine projects on a reasonable schedule and they are superb. Certainly no greater patience required to get along with him than when working in the past with with an older and better known, very talented smith who has cut and welded baby frames and barrels for me, etc, while maintaining a lower profile than Eugene with respect to provoking whiners (of which I can be accused of being, too, I suppose).

A need for patience, it seems, goes with the territoy, whether one be dealing with an artisan whose talents are in short supply, whether one is building a house or playing with Lugers.

Now if anyone out in Lugerland can refer me to a good TIG-welder who has some holes in his schedule, I have a few interesting jobs for him/her/it....

Default gizmo/angelgard conundrum

Mea Culpa, Ed!

As you have apparently surmised, when I experienced that sign on roadblock a month or so ago, (in retrospect, possibly related to IOS6 brainf..t on the Ipad prior to updating to IOS7), and prior to your kind intervention on my behalf resulting in prompt resolution of the issue, as a stop gap measure, I had perhaps misguidedly, expedited access to the Forum by registering my wife (Angelgard...i.e., Angela Gardner) .

Once Gizmo was up and running again, I naively assumed that Angelgard's activity on the site was now a thing of the past. Unfortunately, the Chrome Browser on my PC never got that message and apparently I inadvertently remained logged into the site continuously as Angelgard whenever I utilized that box for access to the site, as opposed to my Ipad or netbook.

Nobody knew nor cared...until I had the temerity to reply to a thread, unbeknown to me using my alter ego.
That's all fixed now. Again, I apologize for the confusion.

As for the comments about the appropriateness of my choice of moniker: It dates back to my original sign on a decade ago as Gizmo, a shortened version of my then email address (Gizmomang@aol.com). It had no special meaning to me then, nor does it now. I am not wed to it. If folks find it awkward to deal with, I'll just use my given name in threads, or perhaps, they might find Angelgard preferable...or even something like Angelgard-gizmo! (lol)

Whatever works, works. Your call and thanks again for keeping me wired.

Morris Gardner aka Gizmo, husband of Angela Gardner (angelgard)

Can't speak for Eugene, but I'm trying to source some buffalo horn to carve one or two buttplates for my projects, just like those applied to some of early DWM's.

PS...early DWM's...in fact, all the original I have seen...or seen pictures of, never had a log on the buttplate. Again, can't speak for Eugene...Maybe I'll use my Forum logon moniker...just don't know which one (s) ....lol

Default source for buffalo horn grips

Many thanks, amigo...

Three of them promised in my mailbox by 12/16..if they are as good as they look, thick enough for my needs, and manageable to work without pulling my hair out, I'll not only keep them...I'll order two more while they are still in stock.

Midway Sales can often come up with pleasant surprises re:relatively obscure needs...these for instance, as well as two different kinds of Manlicher caps that I found several months ago
when nobody else had anything like it. Were a bit rough and in the white of course, but that was fine with me since I needed to cobble them considerably anyway for my applications.anyway.

Default buffalo buttplates

Gee, have I got a deal for you!....

All kidding aside, once I get them, I'll try one and if it comes out well, will then decide what my final needs will be. If I don't use all three, will send one , at least, to you as your finder's fee, on the house...How's that for being a big talker?

Seems from the above you have experience working with horn? I have not done so, of course, but will learn about it soon. obviously. Naively, I thought it would work just like some kind of composite.

Whatever it takes...will give it a try.

yes, I have made walking sticks, got into it - the Scottish ones I bought with horn seemed easy, but working with horn is not easy !

But if you take your time, the effort is excellent - I never got good at it, used antler for walking stick handles instead

Default Re: buffalo horn buttplate blanks from Midway

Probably doesn't ease Circlaw's disappointment to hear this, but I almost missed the boat, too. I had ordered 3 in response to his kind tip, but only two arrived. Obviously, I was the last order in the pile, which is better than my usual luck.

Incidentally, the quality is outstanding....and most certainly large enough and thick enough for any stock application...Will post picks of before and after eventually...when there is an "after", that is.

Just wish I had 3 more!

Buffalo horn trim has been used for years and years on British shotguns, rifles, etc, and should be available from a number of different sources. Don't limit yourself to Midway USA.
Brownell's?

Default Butts, etc.(lol)

Thank you everyone!...

Will try one first. Will coating or impregnating it with something like boiled linseed after final fit and polishing deal with potential moisture issue?

The oil should seal it up somewhat, as well as bring out the color, but I'd still be careful where and how it's stored.
