Looks just like the clearing barrels we used in the army

Except for the muffler!

I cleared a .45 into one at the finance out-processing center at Bien Hoa.
Horde of excited REMFs falling all over themselves wanting to know just what the HELL was going on and me standing there looking innocent with a smoking gun.

PRICELESS

this one will contain the muzzel blast and noise thats why it has a muffler attached to it.

I thought perhaps the muffler was a joke...Or part of the Honda ATV...But it's actually part of the clearing barrel???

How effective is it??? Is the entrance aperture curtained, maybe by a thick rubber sheet with a slot in it???

Some years ago, when I was working as an automotive mechanic, I was impressed by how quiet a Cadillac I was working on was...Over the years, when working on rifles or handguns that needed testing (but not accuracy), I thought of that Cadillac...and its muffler...

I have enough land that shooting into a berm wouldn't be any hazard to neighbors...But the noise might be offensive...I've thought of fastening a Cadillac muffler to a bench and firing through it into a berm...Using some kind of rubber sleeve to protect the muzzle......

I've used handgun clearing barrels (usually 55 gal drums full of sand) and even a ceiling mounted clearing barrel for M16's...But a 'silenced' clearing barrel is a new one...

Thanks for posting! Please expound further on the silencing qualities!

it is not completed yet, but it will have the thick rubber over the firing hole as required, it is a bit over built using heavy wall 22 inch high pressure pipe as the structure , the muffleras stated was attached to reduce the noice of the muzzel blast, here are a set of directions the military uses for construction of a clearing barrel. http://www.usarak.army.mil/policies/...20Encl%203.pdf

Are you going to use this for live fire function testing?

I guess the REMFs were wondering why you discharged a live round into the barrel instead of clearing the piece first.

Reminds me of my first tour in Germany. There was a young Lieutenant in another unit that was assigned courier duty to take some classified material to the headquarters in Heidelberg. When he got there he saw the barrel and the sign "Clear Your Weapon", so he did...WHAM, WHAM, WHAM...a full magazine. The MPs weren't amused.

I have a friend who picked up a lengh of concrete pipe. I'm guessing it is 24' inner diameter and maybe six feet long. He has it up on saw horses in front of the shooting position on his home property range. The shooting bench is just behind it and he fires through the pipe, which does a really nice job of deadening the firearm's report.

It would also redirect the sound fore & aft rather than let it spread...

Back in the 80's, I decided to try skydiving...Static line, Para-Commander, 4000 feet...Terrifying, but the biggest surprise was the total silence as you drift down...Nothing for the sounds to bounce off of...Nothing...I could see the Cessna circling, the guys on the ground, another skydiver drifting down...I tried shouting, even my own voice was muted...Quite an acoustical experience...

test firing a .22lr is just a whisper or pfffft, ..38 spl and 9mm a bit more , 762x 39 the loudest but greatly reduced , since it will be used for live firing and heavy calibers ,it is built to heavier thickness than normaly would be required ,

since it will be used for live firing and heavier calibers beyond the 9mm m9 and .223 m16 it is somewhat over built. better to be safe than sorry.

I told a red faced Lt that a round was stuck in the chamber and I obediantly cleared it by firing it into the obligatory bucket of sand.

It was the only shot most ever heard fired.

I was a pretty salty looking E 6 finishing 2 tours in the bush and they were glad to get me processed and gone. I had a couple frags they worried I might want to unload.

Still got that pistol-traded a Swedish K for it.

I really have to wonder sometimes just how many weapons were bootlegged out of viet nam. they were so concerned about the drugs being smuggled they would often miss other things,

It was pretty easy to bring anything from overseas up until the 1968 gun law.
