Default Spring Replacement

I am planning on working up some loads for one or both of my Mauser parabellums. One is in 9mm and the other is 7.65mm. Both of these pistols were used when I bought them and I have no idea how many or what kind of loads went thru them.

Would it be a good idea to replace the mainsprings in both pistols with new Wolff standard(38lb.) mainsprings? Does anyone on here have experience with the Wolff springs in the Luger? I have a set in my 77' P-1 and they work great..........

I think you will find with the current 7,65 mm loadings the new springs might be a bit strong. Check the ejection first, does the Luger kick the empty briskly, perhaps 8 feet in the air? That is about right. If it just dribbles out, you dont need a stronger spring. I do think most 9mms can benefit from a standard weight spring. Too strong a spring and you can have failures to eject. Too weak a spring and you can break an ejector, or crack a rear toggle. I would sugguest shooting the gun with the loads you plan to use in it and witness the ejection prior to spring replacements or better yet, have another shooter fire it and you watch the emptys fire up and out of the Luger. Wolff are the springs I use in my restoration. excellent.

There is a range of recoil springs available. You can get a kit with the different springs:

Hi:

Not unless your original springs are worn out. This is unlikely.

For perfect function and accuracy, please handload!!

I know when I replaced my main spring the one that came out was almost a full 2 inches shorter then the new one that I installed.

Ray, I remember when Hugh and I were first working up loads I found two powders I really liked with a 124 gr FMJ. Unique for standard 4" Barrelled Lugers and for finicky Artillerys a good bit of Blue Dot could make those long barrelled Lugers boom and rock and roll,

Default Luger Springs

Thanks to each and everyone of you for your inputs; you fellas and the rest of the guys on this forum are the nicest, most helpful people I have ever had the good fortune to communicate with.

I have seen Lugers in the past that were locked open for years and thought this would have to have an effect on the mainspring. I have fired the 9mm with Winchester white-box and the 7.65 with Fiocchi and Geco and there were no malfunctions of any kind. Both of my 29/70's have 6" barrels.

I installed a Wolff mainspring(std. weight) in my 1921 DWM, and it is performing well. I also installed the firing pin spring that came with the mainspring. I also reload and this is what I have been using with success:

(1) 9mm 115gr FMJ with Unique, and Power Pistol

(2) 30 Luger Red Dot and Bullseye. The BE load is a factory matching/replacement load according to my 1970 Lymans Reloading manual.

I have located a 93gr LRN bullet that is for the 30 Luger brass. It is working out very well for me in my Luger.

Yes, please...I have three Wolff mainsprings sitting on my bench [36, 38, 40#] and they are all right around 3 1/2" long...Your mainspring would be 1 1/2" compared to those...I have to wonder if it would even cycle properly...(But it would be a breeze to install)...

I never fired it with the original main spring so I couldn't tell you if it worked or not.

Hmmmm...... it would seem either one of 2 things has happened here. #1 my short term memory is worse then I remember or #2 the original spring has started to retake its original length. I'm leaning towards the later as the spring poked its way thru the small zip lock bag I had it in and it no longer fits in the bag anymore. I can still post a pic if you like as the kink in it is still present.
