TRADGETY AT LAWSON CREEK
My house is located on the South side of Lawson Creek across Gastineau Channel from the City of Juneau. My three little dogs started barking at the sliding glass door this morning. Not seeing any cause for the barking, I let them out into the fenced yard and they ran to the fence and raised a racket. Two Sitka black tail deer were running across the 1000 foot wide tide flat in front of our house. I gathered the dogs into the house in hopes that they would not further spook the deer. However, it was too late; both deer were at the edge of the tide flat and bounded into the 4000 foot wide Gastineau Channel that separates Douglas Island from Juneau (the Mainland). The deer swam with their heads and ears above the water and could easily be followed (Reportedly a man will only last 15 to 30 minutes in this cold Ocean water). As they approached the opposite shore one set of ears occasionally disappeared as they struggled in the icy cold water. Three large cruise ships blocked access to the most of the Mainland shore. My last view saw only one set of little ears struggling to swim around one of the huge cruise ships. Jan |

That's a sad thing to experience, Jan. I hope they made it.

If nothing was wrong with them, they should be fine. Saw quite a bit of wildlife swimming between the islands of the Southeast Passage during my times up there on a Buoy Tender out of Ketchikan.
