Luger I.D.
A friend of mine has a NO DATE, commercial DWM. All it has is a crown over N on the barrel and forward receiver, sr#'s under the barrel and forward receiver and last 2 under the side plate, on the take down, trigger and rear toggle. Also has the DWM logo on top. It's in 30 cal. (7.65) It has a high polish blue finish.
I know the crown/N is a commercial German proof, and DWM is the make, but how do you date it? I said I think it's about a 1920. as Mauser took over production about 1930. It's after the end of WWI in 1918 because it's not a 9mm, and it's before going back to 9mm under cover. So how to date it., Is the only way to look up the serial number? . |

It is probably what is known as an Alphabet DWM manufactured in the 1920s. Knowing the serial number and letter suffix should allow a good estimate of year of manufacture.
