Takedown tool

Gents,

I've seen mention on several posts about something called a take down tool. What is this mysterious thing used for? The Artillery I inherited from my grandfather didn't come with anything except a modded holster (by modded I mean whoever had it cut the end off so the barrel could stick out.) Are these tools marked with the same serial number as the gun or are they nothing special.
