Introducing myself...

Hi,

just joined, thought I'd introduce myself. I got interested in collecting Firearms a while ago (got my C&R). I have a German Mauser 98k rifle. It shoots well and I like it. It's a Russian capture and the stock was covered in a horrible red shellac finish (the Russians put that on?). I am currently in the process of striping and refinishing the stock. It should look good when I am done, but it is a long process to get all the coats of finish on there.

Yeah it won't be "all original" since I refinished the stock, but its what I want to make it look nice.. "I don't live in a museum"

Hopefully soon I'll get a Luger p08 to go along with the 98k.
Lots of info on this site, I'm glad I registered so I can read it all.

Welcome to the forum!

There's a lot of history in that iron...

When it comes to Lugers, go slow; get the reference material and study before you make any moves... You will get the education. Reading is less expensive than "Luger University" (the practical side of buying when you're not sure).

Silly question just because I am new...

Just got my first Luger p08 and was firing it today.
Is it normal for it to eject brass vertically into the air? brass flies about 12 feet straight up.

I did a search on these forums and found one other reference to this:

I hope this is not a symptom of ammo that is too "hot" for this gun.
I was at an outdoor (covered) range and the brass was hitting the roof!

The ejection pattern is completely normal. I often shoot at an indoor range and the owner has politely requested I not shoot my Lugers there after breaking several light bulbs located directly above the shooting positions!

If your lucky enough to get one of those hot casings to go down the back of your shirt, you can break out into a spontaneous "Luger Dance".

Mine hits me in the forehead...very distracting...

Another favorite is a hot casing between your shooting glasses and eyebrow. Singed more than my share over the years.

You may want to be certain that your ejector is not broken, as sometimes they will do exactly that if the end is broken off, thereby not directing it off to one side.
Seems like a different ejector should direct the cases to one side of the other.

I'm doing the same with an Enfield No4 Mk1 stock/fore-end. I used Simple Green and steaming water to get as much oil/grease/Cosmoline out of the wood...waiting for all parts to dry for a week or two...they'll be modified to No5 spec for a faux 'Jungle Carbine' look...I have the required hardware en route now...Just need to shorten the barrel, re-crown, and turn down the muzzle for the flash hider...Lotsa fun...

I've been thinking of wearing a helmet...or at least a hat...I'm not sure if it's coming straight back or flipping up a bit & then back...

My Mauser C96 & M30 both eject back, too...

Funny thing about the Mausers ejecting back. The Chinese reportedly used to shoot their Brooms "gansta style" to avoid spent cases from falling directly back down into the chamber area and clogging up the works. Or so it is said...
