I finally came across some Luger items

Being that I'm a greenhorn to all this, I was wondering if I should post my questions and pics here or if I need to post the navy stock in the navy section (or maybe the luger accessories section) I'm not sure.....anyways the items I recently acquired (the story I can share later) are as follows: Possible commercial navy board stock, Brauer brothers holster, DWM Luger w/ 8" barrel (no artillary sights maybe aftermarket setup) and misc. mags. I'm just looking for some schooling from the experts.

Here are some pictures of the luger I picked up recently. I have been reading alot of posts to start educating myself on the different types off lugers so I think I may have a commercial model here, but let me know what you guys think. The sights on this gun are strange, I haven't seen anything like it on any of the other pics in the forum. I did read a post that had a reference the factory installed "King" sights, but can't find it again. I'm just really curious as to what I have and some kind of value (the bargain hunter in me). I'll post the other items next.

Its either an artillery barrel with the sights removed or an aftermarket, but the flat on the top makes me think arty, but the lack of a serial number on the underside makes me think aftermarket. The front sight looks like an add-on to the original artillery sight.

As a shooter its worth around $800-$1000

I'm still learning the tricks for taking nice pictures and have found some good stickies on the subject. With that said, my picks don't really show that the patina on the barrel is almost identical to the patina on the frame which I would think shows the barrel has been with the gun for a long time. The last owner said he got it from his wife’s father years ago and the father brought it back from Europe (he didn't say if he was there for the war). Here is some pictures of the holster I got with it, once again it seems like the gun has been with the holster along time based on the fit and the wear patterns. The magazines I got are in nice shape and I'm assuming the wood one without the "Germany" stamp might be the correct one as the gun has no "Germany" stamp. I'm curious if anyone has an info on the age of the gun or info on the holster and magazines. I'll post the board stock in the navy section.

The others can tell you more about the magazines, but you have a wonderful shooter/tack-driver. Nothing like going to the range and shooting better than everyone else with a 90+ year old gun with a bad reputation.

The first three are original WW1 / 1920's era magazines, fairly nice ones. The last two would be your best bet in shooting, as they appear to be MecGar, and they are some of the finer shooting mags out there.

Steve, The gun never left the factory this way so it would be considered a shooter. It looks like a very nicely converted target gun.

You will not harm its value by shooting it.

Steve,

Looks like you have a really excellent Luger. Congratulations.

One thing you should consider. As you observed, the ATF considers attaching a Navy Stock to anything but the appropriate Navy Luger to be a Short Barreled Rifle, which is a NFA firearm. That, of course, requires a special transfer license and is heavily regulated in the USA.

I've been told that some ATF offices have considered possession of a stock and Luger as constituting "Intent", which could cause you problems even if you were never to attach or use them together.

I'm pretty conservative about following regulations to the letter. This might not actually be a real practical issue. Others here may have more background that they could contribute on this...
