Luger in Brazil

Dear Sirs,

I'm writing from Brazil and I would like to know if it's possible to identify the Luger shown below?

It seems to be a DWM 1914 military Luger, but I am not shure.

Is it original? What is the condition and value? Could it be considered a collector's gun?

It appears to be a DWM 1914. It also looks like it had been refinished.

I can't see the pictures because of my firewall.
However, please, have in mind that collector's parameters ar more flexible in Brazil than US, mainly because availability of such things are not the same here.

When I arrived at home I will check the pictures and let you know what I think.

Looks very similar to the svw 45 coded P38 variation (so called "grey ghost")

Wasn't the SVW 45 produced by Mauser?

But this one was clearly made by DWM!

Better pictures now. A good looking piece. What is the full serial number? Read this off the front of the frame, just under the barrel. Numbers, and possibly a letter. There should be the same numbers on the underside of the barrel. Here too some smaller numbers, 8,81-8,86 which is the bore diameter land to land in mm. Also, I can not quite make out the inspection stamps on the right side of the receiver. Looks like a U, then ?, ? and then the acceptance stamp. Take a look on this forum under "technical information", and see if you can identify these letters.

What makes me think it may have been refinished: On the top of the left toggle knob is the head of a small retaining pin. This should be in the white, or bare metal. It looks blued in the photos. This often happens during a refinish.
Another clue is what is called a "halo" round some numbers. These on the barrel, top the extractor, and the back of the toggle after the DWM logo. If refinished these halos will not be evident.

Are there any letters/numbers stamped on the grip straps, front or rear? Does the crown eagle (C/E) on the right side of the reciever match the one on the left side of the breech black? The one on the receiver looks like the Erfurt mark?

I think that is a Mauser frame with a DWM top, so collector value is lowered. Very nice looking gun though. Thanks for posting!

I was just making a bad joke. When I commented, your picture was not visible... the screen was grey. That's why I called it a "grey ghost"... because you couldn't see it.

Your luger looks refinished, you can tell by the heavy buffing marks. Your frame also looks like it has the "mauser hump" indicating 1930's or later manufacture. Is there a serial number on the frame in front of the triggerguard?

That is a nice looking Luger and should be a great shooter. Everybody needs a shooter in their collection and you got yours first thing. Congrats!

I received these photos by e-mail, because I am interested in buying my first Luger.

Here in Brazil is not easy to find a Luger, mainly if you want a good condition one.

There are some "Brazilian Contracts" and a few "1920 Commercial Type".

I would like to find a Nazi, but these are very rare here.
It can only be found on the hands of some brazilian WWII veterans (25.000 brazilian troops joined US forces in Italy by 1943-44) or with german inmigrants at southern Brazil.

But I will not give up!

Morning Paulo,

It could be a good 'First Luger' if the price is reasonable. You'd learn what to look for and what things should look and feel like. My first was a byf 41 with at least 5 different numbers on the parts, but it shoots great! In the USA, this one would have no collector value, but as a shooter would be in the $500-700 range, I think. Brazil, though is a different market, so I don't know what the value would be there. They are fun to shoot. But be careful with the ammo. Modern ammo is different. Read all the info under the heading "Shooting and Reloading".
