Need help pricing Luger p.08 42 byf
I am looking at purchasing a Luger p.08 from a good friend's Uncle. He stated that he got the pistol for a WWII vet that brought it back as a war trophy, but has no papers. The Uncle also said all the numbers match inside and out, and the holster was original. My friend says he has known the Uncle owning the gun for at least 30 years. The gun is marked 42 with byf. The two magazines do not match the gun. The holster is also not marked with any military acceptance stamp that I can find. There is an interesting ink stamp inside the holster that has some sort of crest and German writing, though I can't make it out. That is the only distinguishing marks I could find on the holster. The gun appears in nice shape and is shootable, well oiled and taken care of. The only other interesting thing I noticed is the serial number is "320," which seems odd to me because I could only find four digit serial numbers searching online. Can someone advise what a fair price for this set would be please?

Photos and better condition of the gun would help, but based on available info. I'd say that $1100 is fair for both parties. Depends on what side of the deal you are on. Snitch it at $800 or take a beating at $1400.

Jason, The holster..is it a hardshell? It is sounding like a softshell...That could make a $200-300 difference to you.
As David says..It would help to see a photo or two. He gives good price advice without seeing the pistol. Jerry Burney

Hi Jason, Photos are an absolute must for any meaningful price estimate. Military Lugers were numbered in "blocks" of 10,000 followed by a letter suffix. The chances of any Luger having a three digit serial number are one in ten. Regards, Norm
