Most likely not a "9" as those pistols don't appear on the scene until later in the war. Judging by the helmet and field cover this photo was probably taken in 1914/15.

Nice photo,

Reminds me of my 'Mr. Moustache' photo that I got a few years ago, together with a portrait of the same gentleman, including his well cared for moustache.

And a bit more unclear, but interesting nonetheless: The Waffenmeister with his C96 in hand.
