Hi Power repair advice

Hi all, and thanks for reading. I have a nice condition German WW2 issue Hi Power with an interesting problem. At some point in time a separate barrel bushing was fitted held in place by the front sight post being staked. This work was done very well, the bushing is very difficult to detect. The wear pattern suggests this modification was done earlier in the gun's life rather than recently.

The problem is that the front sight has become loose, to the point that it could probably be pulled out quite easily. Although this isn't a collector gun I'd like to have it repaired without damaging the existing finish and using the original parts.

So, can anyone advise as to suitable techniques, (re-stake, silver solder etc..), and possibly a person you'd trust to do the work ?

I've stared at this problem for a few years and finally want to get this fixed !

re-stake or silver solder will not solve your problem in the long run, sounds like a small tig weld and hand fitting my be the answer.......can you post a few detailed pictureds ?

I'll charge the camera and see. Neither the photographic equipment or skills are up to much !

By eye you can see the base of the sight pin as a small circle in the bushing and you can also twist the sight a fraction either way or pull it up about a 1/32. The bushing itself will also move around just a fraction. If all was tight you'd have to know you were looking for it to tell.

I have about 1 more day here and then off for the Christmas holiday, I run a full time gun smith business and am sure I can help you, but gone through the holiday as I said, running about a month back log at any one time, if you want to get together after 1 Jan we'll see what we can do, I use the forum here as a reference, ask around.....waiting for pictures.....best to you

I believe that the barrel bushing / front sight installation is original to your Hi-Power. My none to reliable memory is telling me that the original Hi-Power used a seperate barrel bushing that was non-removeable and was retained by the front sight.....

It appears that it wasn't staked properly to begin with.

That's interesting. I know little about the manufacture but recall being told the slide was machined in one piece. I suspect something must have happened in the past several years, or is this a rare and extremely valuable example of the Belgian resistance sabotaging the german war machine ?

I never found a remedy. A severe personal financial downturn resulted in it being sold on, (with full disclosure), 'as is'.
