Take a guess on this one. Wrongly installed coupling?

Besides wrongly installed coupling, what else could cause this? The floor is probably too tight to be removed, and the barrel jams on follower...... Unlikely, he saw the s/n on frame, so it was stripped successfully at least once.....

Could think any other reason? The gun finish looks healthy.

Alvin - That seems to be an M30. I made up one of Wood's unlocking tools years ago, and then tried to put my M30 together with the coupling backwards...there was no way it would go back together with it backwards...maybe the early C96's would, but my M30 wouldn't...

In any event, it is not hard to unlock it without drilling holes; you just need a donor screwdriver ground down and bent, and a soft jawed vise to hold the pistol in...It does take a lot of strength - that spring is strong!!!

I have the original article in my "Gunsmithing: The Tricks Of The Trade" book by J. B. Wood if you buy the gun and need a copy (the tool is actually shown on the cover)...Or you can copy the article from the 1896mauser site, too...

I'd say this one was just stiff, or maybe dirty...I would have no problem buying it...(except that I already have one!)...

$45 for shipping; 8 1/4% NY sales tax, plus FFL fee puts it out of my interest...

Interesting I didn't think any weapon was designed to be put back together to the point that you couldnt at least take it down again. I think somebody is gonna get a good deal on this.

The starting price is fair. For this variation, it's not at collector grade, but at this price, it can be resold easily for profit. Fixing the problem should be a piece of cake.

The only problem is FFL.

The local law is frustrating, but must be observed.

I'm not that familar with New York's laws, but many of the dealers there won't receive or ship to C&R's, and none of the dealers will receive from a non licensee for some reason. I have come to the point where I won't sell a gun to California and New York, just too much hassle to put up with!

That pictured hole is not a hole. It is a depression were the button for the lid latch is. The wood is usually blackened and the metal button is blackened(age or dirt?). Big gouge in the wood,however.

I think Alvin lives in the "Bay State" which is Massachusetts.I know they have alot of restrictive guns laws.Almost as bad as California.

The black avatar is impressive, isn't it? It has a character. It's time to change avatar, but I cannot find an appropriate one, so temporarily using a black rectangle.

The stock, harness, and rod can be sold separately, probably $300+ on Ebay. If I were qualified to acquire this thing, I would have contacted seller. Living in wrong place at wrong time, that's sad. It's not unlike people dropped money on the roadside but I am not allowed to pick it up.

If you are referring to the large hole on the bottom, that's where the pistols butt protrudes from when the gun is inside the holster stock.
The stock cover latch button, seems ok, but it appears that the spring that actuates this latch button has been modified with an external screw, versus the pring being secured from the inside of the stock.
Can anybody confirm the correctness of the outside screw. I don't remember any stocks I have owned having this outer screw for the stock latch?

I probably misunderstood the question.

From picture #9 (copied here), I did not see anything wrong with the cover latch or latch screw. The latch is single milled piece with button, screw installation hole and spring integrated together. As long as it's installed on the body via that latch screw, it's auto-tight.
