Default Concealed carry question for Luger

Got some tickets to big New Years celebration on the Boston Common. In light of recent events I would like to go "prepared". What is a good concealed carry shoulder holster for a luger?

Shoulder Holsters must not grap the toggle knobs with a clamping force or the draw will open the action! I recommend NOT carrying your Luger with the firing pin cocked or a round in the chamber, not good for the firing pin spring or very safe. Consider a small high ride cross draw or a summer special behind and strong side carry. Make sure you test fire your Luger for reliablity (remember I was playing with the spring when I had it)and did not do a follow up test! Also consider a modern firearm (or even a P.38) Above all be safe......and legal!!! ~Thor~

Default You obviously have MA - LTC Class A, "ALP"...

or we would NOT be having this conversation... I think I would have to side with Thor and suggest as glorious as it is to carry a Luger, just the thought of a stovepipe or a feed problem when I really need reliability is enough to stop me from considering my Luger as CCW. A PPK would be a much better choice (or a P.38). For me, my CCW is a SIG P232 in .380.

Thanks for the info. My badly beat up 1916 Erfurt has never failed in approxiamately 500 rounds through it with the mecgar clip. C'mon guys give a luger its due - would the GERMAN armed forces except a non reliable pistol?

Default .Carry Gun

1. The size of a carry piece is important. A P08/P38 is MUCH too big to carry under a jacket in a big city!

2. When you NEED your piece...you don't have time to screw around moving levers-pulling slides/goggles -inserting mags-etc. Carry that SOB loaded!

3. Do you have the balls to pull it and USE it?.. If not, you will end up eating that SOB!

4. Are you willing to be arrested and sued?...it will surely happen even if you are defending yourself!

4. The prefect carry piece is a .45 cal with the dimensions of a Colt .25.......and, this is not possible...so, you go up in cal. and down in size...and, you will meet at the .380!

I have been carrying a PPk/s since 1972 and it has saved my ass a couple of times. Once when confronted by a street crazy in SF and another time when I ran into an armed burglar [knife]leaving my neighbors garage!

Well, he without sin cast the first stone! I gotta tell you Steve, I have carried a Luger before! I hope your gun functions with HPs because I have fired a 124 FMJ through 8" of stacked 2"x4" (actually 5 layers of that were 1 & 1/2") and the bullet salled through it. Be aware FMJ PENETRATE and will go right through a large person making other people behind it in danger. Not a bad thing if you have to go through a car door, but certainly something to be VERY aware of! 115 gr Silvertips are my choice in a 9mm Luger loading. They got a bad rap in the FBI Miami shootings and have been redesigned, they open up very well. Good Luck! I think you have a very reliable Luger Steve from what you have described! ~Thor~

size and weight do have a lot to do with it but i wouldn't say a luger is to big....( i'm 5'9" 170 lbs and can completely conceal a 4 3/4" single action revolver in a shoulder rig while wearing my mechanic's jacket.) be familiar with your weapon...carry loaded with the safety on so when you need to use it all you have to do is flick off the safe (here is where being familiar with the weapon comes in handy) i wouldn't go any lower in caliber than a 9mm (personally my defensive weapons don't go any smaller than a 44)and make sure that you can aquire the sights quickly and easily (this is were the luger falls a little short)and make sure you are legal...(no sense in risking your right to collect these beauties when you could just as effectively carried a defensive clipon knife and been legal)

Though I've never fired my luger, and won't until I find out exactly what it is, where it's been and what it's worth, I have cycled several brands of ammo through it by hand. FMJ seems to be totally reliable and most here will back that up. There is the real danger of over penetration. I reccommend Federal Hydro-Shok +p+. These cycled perfectly through my 1917 with out a hitch slow or fast. Keep in mind these were hand cycled for function. In all my dealings with guns if it cycles by hand it will be reliable on the street. The +p+ ensures there is plenty of power to work the action as needed. But..... IT'S YOUR LIFE. TEST YOUR GUN OF CHOICE WITH THE AMMO YOU INTEND TO CARRY !!! if you have a problem then repair the gun/switch ammo until it's 100% reliable, anything less is not acceptable.

Just my 0.02 worth.

(Personally I carry a Kimber .45 or a Sig 232 .380, both with the Hydro-Shoks)

Default +P ammo is NOT recommended for Lugers...

the metal will just not stand the punishment.

Steve, first, are you licensed to carry in Mass? If your not, forget about it->! Luger is a good weapon, there are better...which will open a box of worms. A semi-auto, double action, one your are familiar with, which when you put it into your hand you do not have to think. Everything must occurr by trained reflex. Your mind must be on him or them, which ever. My preferance is the H & K P-7, only in 9mm. Ammo is Black Talon. You want aprojectile that will "stop" inside the target, nothing that will pass through. The energy must be delivered to the target, no one else. My .02, Hope this helps.

Another good point - the ammo. The black talons are illegal, (as is most everything else), in this state. Thanks to all who replied for the tips.
