Default New Luger Questions

All:

I have recently aquired a very nice luger. I would like to describe it hoping you can confirm my research conclusions then give me your thoughts on re-barreling it. Here is my description:

DESCRIPTION:

- Receiver Date 1936
- S/42 Toggle (Mauser)
- Matching serial numbers on: receiver, toggle, extractor, take-down lever, barrel (barrel is speculation it is very difficult to read but is aligned perfectly with the only existing punch mark).
- Origional receiver SN lightly striken through with different and larger SN stamped just above origional. This SN matches the safety bar and apparently newer frame assembly.
- SN on side plate (next to take down lever) different sn than all others
- Wooden grips
-Stock lug and ring
- Nice bluing
- Magazine with wooden base.
- Three proof cartouches on R/S of receiver are not directly represented in your sketches on the web site. The are from left to right: feathered eagle atop #63 or 53, feathered eagle atop 63, fully feathered eagle. The right and center eagles are most similar to the mauser marks on the proof page 4, number 45. The right proof fully feathered eagle is not on any of the proof pages.

CONCLUSION: This pistol was an origional Mauser pistol for military issue. Post WWII re-work in East Germany with new parts and SN assigned. Frame, side plate, and safety bar appear to be the only non-origional parts. I still have the cardboard box it was purchased in. I know it was purhcased at Gart Bros Sporting Goods. "Manufactured in Germany under official German government contract" appears on the box in addition to the silouette of the pistol and the German script "Parabellum Pistole Model '08". I assume after re-work the gun was used by E-German or WS Pact police first or simply sold commercially in the US.

ANYONE'S THOUGHTS ON ABOVE?:

FINALLY: The barrel on this pistol appears to be well shot-out despite the excellent condition of the bolt face, extractor and frame. Lands are barely noticable except for their grey color. It is very inaccurate at the range at 25m compared to my P-1 which shoots a tight group.

THOUGHTS/RECOMMENDATIONS: I have found a new 4" barrel for this pistol for $100.00 at a well known weapons parts outlet. I presume this pistol has no great collector value and replacing the barrel will have no impact on that facet of its usefulness. I want to replace it because frankly I really enjoy shooting it. I would appreciate good thoughts and opinions here and also recommendations on G-Smiths in the KC area who can competantly replace the barrel.

Many Thanks for your time and help.

Excuse me, but does that actually mean that it is possible to fit a longer barrel on a standard gun?
