Parts interchangeability?

From a novice Luger owner:

Are the major parts (barrel, receiver, frame, toggle parts, grips, sideplate, etc) of the various makers (Erfurt, DWM, Swiss, Mauser) generally interchangeable?

no, yes

generally all parts required hand fitting, so generally parts are close, but not compleltly interchangeable

Hi Jeff,

I'm currently working on a parts comparison diagram, for a future publication.

The Swiss M1929 and the 1970s Mauser Parabellum have a lot in common but also differ strongly from the DWM/Erfurt/Krieghoff P08 design in more ways than one. Grip safety and safety construction is completely different.

Generally speaking, the toggle assembly as a whole is pretty much interchangeable. Springs, sear, firing pins and sideplates and small bits as well.

Barrels are a challenge, receivers will work with some tweaking, etc.., etc...

Swapping parts without thoroughly checking fit and functionality is not without danger. I once had a gun go full auto after a firing pin mix-up.

The luger was designed in the days when hand fitting of parts at the factory was relatively cheap, so don't expect just "any" part to interchange. You do have a better chance with parts from the same manufacturer of the same era. Most grips, side plates, sears, etc require some fitting. A random interchange of these parts is just a matter of luck. TH
