Default Lugers in movies

Last night, I was surfin' channels and came across a black and white movie on Turner Classic Movies by the name of "Mrs. Miniver". It was made in 1942. I happened upon a scene where an English woman finds a German pilot (I assume he had been shot down) hiding in her garden. He wakes up and covers her with his Luger and makes her take him inside to get food and drink. This Luger stays in full view prominently for several minutes; long enough for me to see that the safety is off and that there is no round in the chamber! After a few more minutes, he passes out and she takes the Luger and hides it. Once the Luger was out of sight, I lost interest and went to bed.

I didn't recall this one on our forum list, but that doesn't mean it's not there. If it's not, it should be.

Rick, see my post on the thread "Prettier than my Dreyse " I mentioned this movie! I saw it for a couple of minutes and noticed the Luger too, it seems he was wounded! Thor

Yeah, that was why he passed out. I just haven't seen a movie where a Luger was in view for that long a time! By the way, I can't remember who it was that had compiled a list of all the movies with Lugers and posted it on the forum a while back.

OK! Well, we need to add "Mrs. Miniver" with *** for close-ups. I did not watch the whole movie, obviously, but what I saw was great! Could be that you never see the Luger again in the movie. It was pretty central in the segment I saw!

Sunday night, if you have HBO. This is the final episode, and according to the trailer, Easy Company captures Hitler's lair, Berchesgarten (SP?). In one scene a German officer surrenders to Maj. Winters by handing over his Luger (butt first), in a very formal gesture, like surrendering your sword.

I have an uncle that was with the 1269th Engineer Combat Batallion in support of the 101st in the Berchesgarten area as the war came to an end. He was instrumental in the opening of the Goring treasure cave in that area. He had three pictures that he made of much of the treasures removed from the cave, and a collector in Dallas found out that he had the pictures. The collector ask to borrow the pictures to have copies made, and never got around to returning the pictures. The best picture is in Volume I of LTC Thomas Johnson's "WWII German War Booty". The picture is described as being from the personal collection of another collector, so apparently the a$$hole sold my uncles pictures. A very good account of what was found in the cave is in "WWII German War Booty" Volume II starting on page 45.

Well just to comment, I've been to the Berchesgaden area a couple of times while I was in the Army and it is beautiful. We stayed in the General Walker hotel, which was a nazi establishment at the time. They had a couple of tours that we went on, where they had underground bunkers and such. Would have enjoyed seeing one of the caves where they stored stolen loot, but most were collapsed or the entrances buried under rubble. Close to the hotel we even walked around one of Hitler's houses that is in ruins and then went to the Eagles Nest and it was cloudy that day.

We are looking forward to seeing Band of Brothers tomorrow. Hopefully we'll see some Lugers, but I'll enjoy it no matter what.

In the book, "Marathon Man," towards the end, the hero is to meet the villain who killed his brother and tortured the hero to locate missing diamonds. He knows that the villain will frisk him but he needs a weapon.

The hero takes a Luger owned by his brother and fieldstrips it. He loads the chamber with a round, reassembles the cannon and tapes it to his wrist under a heavy winter coat. The villain frisks him, but misses the Luger cannon. The hero raises his wrist and fires the single round by pressing the sear.

I do not believe this was in the movie which starred Dustin Hoffman. However, some of you might be interested in reading the book, which was a pretty good thriller.

Also, I don't think I would try that trick at home.

Here is the latest list. Many of these movies I have not seen (yet), so its success can be attributed primarily to those who have provided me with their assistance. Unfortunately, some of those contributions may have been lost due to a malfunction with my computer a couple of months ago. If you sent me a movie listing and it is not here, please try again and accept my apologies.

I am sure the 'Luger' trick was not in the Dustin Hoffman movie 'Marathon Man'. The trick, as described, would work but there would be some serious burns I would imagine. As for a gunsmith taking apart a Luger with a round in the chamber..what a terrible surprise! So far I have been lucky with not having an accidental discharge with a Luger. I can see how it could happen.

Default Re: Nick Carter's Luger

In one of the "Nick Carter" books I read, one of his capturers taunted Nick that a rifle man was always faster than a pistol dude! Nick challenged him to a duel of sorts, an assemble of a Luger vs a Rifle with the end of the assembly to see which could get his shot off first. I can't remember which rifle it was, but Nick's Luger which he affectionately calls "Wilhemina" was the Luger. Upon getting the "go" signal both contestants started putting there weapon together, and it looked pretty good for the rifleman until ol Nick put a round into the upper cannon of Wilhemina and killed the rifle man with the cannon! Maybe not real life stuff, but a good entertaining sequence IMO! Thor
